That would be the ultimate and final disposal of shredded documents-plow the clippings under or let them decompose in a compost pile-I would suppose for this to work the papers would have to have been printed with non-toxic ink.-Soy based inks-beleive most inks are soy based now.

Actually a good compost pile will detoxify many things, so it's not really necessary to worry about the nature of the ink on the paper - as long as it's free from heavy metals like mercury or cadmium - which it almost certainly is.
Some COLORED inks contained mercury,cadmium and lead.That was from years ago.That was why there was warnings against using colored printed papers for starting cooking fires.also this could leave toxic deposits in fireplace chimneys.
