Hey everyone! Hope you are all well. As you may have seen in a previous thread, I acquired a 1984 G.E. Mark 27 drop-in range from a cousin’s kitchen remodel. I’ve had the chance to use it some, and have found that I really like it. The only things I don’t like are the lack of a self cleaning function on the oven, and the lack of a clock, due to its status as a BOL model. I am generally pretty careful to keep the inside of my ovens clean, so I can live without the self-clean function. However, I use the timer a lot when baking, so the lack of a clock is pretty annoying. However, I have found a solution on Ebay from G.E.’s arch rival: Westinghouse! They offered what appears to be the clock unit out of a 1960’s Frigidaire oven turned into a countertop clock, with the cookmaster portion wired to an outlet on the back (perfect for your west bend lazy day!). The mark 27 came out in 1961, so this is a period-correct solution for this issue. The best part of this is that if this clock unit was made by the same manufacturer as frigidaire’s (international according to my frigidaire service literature), then it should in theory have a buzzer which sounds the same as my granny’s wall oven’s did, which was one of the machines that first got me into appliances (and cooking, for that matter). Does anyone know if they are actually the same, and does anyone have any experience with these?
Thanks,
Thatwasherguy.

1960s electric range clock

These certainly are the same clock, if you’re really interested in using this Mark 27 GE range why not get a self cleaning one with the features you’re interested in these things are still out there.

I know the whereabouts of a brand new Coppertone GE Mark 27 self cleaning Oven I think it even has the roast thermometer and maybe a rotisserie if you’re interested in one that’s Coppertone Brown that is.

Get in touch if interested, John

GET BOTH!

Then you could have one for timed baking and self cleaning and one for just plain non-messy making and have two 8 inch surface units. And be on the lookout for one middle of the line model with the clock to swap into your BOL range.

self-clean function

I absolutely forbid everyone in my household to use this destructive feature in my 27" GE electric double wall oven.

Prior to the present oven there was another GE unit, installed circa early '80's, it featured self-cleaning in the upper oven, which we used routinely.

After 5 years of use the upper oven cavity developed multiple pinholes attributed to the self-clean feature, the oven was ruined.

When you think of it the oven goes into "incinerate" mode when the self-clean feature is selected to reduce the spilled and splashed food residue into ashes, unfortunately it also incinerates the porcelain finish, as well the steel it is applied to.

Perhaps the steel used in the first oven was of inferior quality, however the present oven is at least 35 years old and has not developed any "pukas" within both oven interiors.

GE self cleaning oven liner durability

Hi Jeff, I don’t know what happened with your oven. You may have been over using the feature. I only run myself cleaning ovens on average of once a year and the liners have held up beautifully in them. I don’t find it destructive at all. I even leave the racks in and they’re still fine.

Maybe it has something to do with high humidity in the area you live but between the two homes, we have seven self cleaning ovens and they are all in excellent shape. The only one that showing any sign of rust in the liner is the micro convection, gas caloric oven, but gas ovens always have a lot more rust issues because of all the humidity produced from gas burning.

Our seven ovens range in age from 1968 to 1986 and One is a Tappan To are GE P7 ovens 1975, three are Thermidor ovens ranging in age from 1972 to 1986. I would rate the high heat self cleaning oven features one of the best Appliance inventions to ever happen with ovens, If you want to see a lot of damage to ovens, you should see all the ovens that I work on that people spray oven cleaner all over the place inside you just simply cannot get them clean with oven cleaner. It ruins a lot of metal parts, especially around the heating elements and gas burners, oven lights sensors, etc..
