It looks similar to my old 1981 but simpler and a little newer.

It was free! It works. Was it worth picking up?

It shows kudh230y1. Curious if it's post Hobart?

The 23 in the model number would indicate a post-Hobart machine.  It should have the Whirlpool power module system, which most here would agree is an improvement.  It might be an unusual "builder's model" if it's not a Custom, as I'm pretty sure the Custom model number would be KUDC23.

It's a very capable dishwasher and can clean as well as other 23-series machines further up the model line.

Probably a builder's unit.  The "Energy Saver" buttons labeled as Wash and Dry are interesting ... the console touts "Automatic Water Heating" so can it be presumed that Energy Saver Wash disables that function?

Whirlpool bought KA in 1986.  Doctrine indicates that 21 series was produced 04/84 through 02/89, so 22 and later picked up progressive WP influences until Hobart parentage disappeared.  I had a KUDS22 bought in January 1992.

What would have been the last Hobart-influenced machine?  Would it be a KA 24 or 25?  Or was it all Whirlpool when then went to tall tubs?

Newer and improved

As was pointed out, the 23 series was the last iteration of the Hobart designed machines. It did have the power module wash system and most models had the heat delay on the wash portion of the cycle that ensured the water was heated to an effective temperature to clean the dishes. The 24 series was a direct Whirlpool clone and has continued on until today with differences in features and build components.

John L, based on your experience, what specific improvements did WP make to the 21 series once it was their baby? And did they add the heat delay to the 22 series or only the 23's?

Seems to wash better than my 1981 Superba. I think due to the longer spray cycle... So far so good!

You guys are experts in these things!

Just found that the unit I used to own was a KDS19 and a good unit. I seem to prefer this so far however. Quieter and cleans better.

This machine was on my local Facebook exchange. Very similar controls just different styling. No model provided but it looks like it has a power clean module so a 23 series as well. The buttons are energy saver wash, energy saver dry, option reset, and start.

No, the subject dishwasher is a 23. The 24 series did away with the classic KitchenAid bottom rack dish arrangement and went with a typical bottom rack that is like an UltraWash dishwasher. And the KitchenAid 24 & 25 series had SS tubs. No more porcelain tubs.
