Check out this real estate listing and get a load of the colors!  Nothing bashful about the owners' desire for color.  Although the exterior looks to be a really dark blue or even purple, the listing says that it's black.

Gentlemen, start your paint brushes!

I've seen worse. A family that went to our church in the late 60's decorated their house very uniquely. In the living room they painted three walls and the ceiling black (or very dark gray), another a bright aqua, and had carpet that had a black background, with a design in aqua and coral. Chairs and sofa were aqua, coral and yellow. The kitchen was similar colors. They were rather "arty" people, and moved to California by the mid 70's.

I was listening to a radio show today hosted by a Cincinnati realtor, and she was talking about the latest trends. She said black kitchens are becoming popular - cabinets, countertops, and walls. Not something I'd likely want.

I agree with Tom, I’ve seen worse, nothing that SEVERAL cans of paint and lots of work couldn’t change. To each his own. At least they were neat, although the decor is cluttered.

I hate gray

The way people use gray on homes these days makes me feel anxious and empty inside. Just a bunch of shades of gray with occasional use of white or brown as "contrast". I only condone the use of gray with the pairing of a sharper contrasting color like red or blue.

Not a fan of the colors used in that listed house either, too many dark shades.

Hans,
We happen to like color too. We painted our kitchen a beautiful coral color that goes well with the original dark wood cabinets, white appliances and the almond formica counter tops. Our den is painted a medium green, our bedroom is powder blue, the upstairs bathroom is lilac and the downstairs 1/2 bath is gray. The living room is a tan beige and the dining room is a lighter shade of the living room beige with a red accent wall. The ceilings in every room, the trim, doors and the stairwell and upstairs hallway are all linen white. Every room has its own character and is cheerful. We chose these colors to complement the original countertops in the bathrooms and kitchen and the original carpets upstairs. All of the window coverings are either white or neutral.

I think people should decorate their homes to please themselves. I’m so over the HGTV way of always decorating and painting in the mode of the day to please “buyers”. The occupants of a home should be able to enjoy their surroundings. If we were to sell our home we wouldn’t repaint for potential buyers. Let the new owners paint the rooms to their own taste.

I always marched to the beat of my own drum and never followed currents trends whether it was clothes, decor, music, cars, hobbies....whatever.

At my previous house, I painted 50's pastel colors in a home built in 1970. Light blue for the family room, yellow for the kitchen, light pink for formal dining room, and mint green for the Livingroom. Redid the original peach colored bathroom in black and white using a toilet that was 32 years older than the house itself. My room had the original green and white striped wallpaper. Left it there until a month or 2 before I moved (about 50 years old) before tearing it down. Didn't bother me in the least. Also had a cool 70's wallpaper mural in the spare bedroom that was original to the home. I wanted to leave it but the realtor said it had to go even though she liked it and was in perfect condition. Too dated, I guess.

There was a real bright red house at the corner of one street near me I would drive by on my way to the bank... It was handy reminding me where to turn at and it even had a red door...

Though a few years ago it kept the red door but is now painted a dull, smokey gray...

I honestly don't think it's that bad. To many dark colors for my taste in a small house, but the ones that are there are current. I actually like the color of the living room. The outside could use with a little contrasting light-colored trim.

Paint is easy to fix and should reflect your personality. We called my ex-house an "Ode to Beige" when we bought it, and the owner was a house painter. Every single room was a shade of beige, the wallpaper was beige, carpet was beige, kitchen cabinets beige, appliances beige, curtains and blinds beige. Took quite a while to bring some color to it

I don't find the (paint) colors ugly or offensive, in fact, they are a pleasing break from the current trend to absolute neutrality.  But I do think the interior is terribly cluttered.  I can't imagine trying to dust and vacuum and keep that place clean.

Lawrence,
I agree with you about the pleasing break from the ubiquitous trend towards neutrality. It’s clear that these folks take pride in ownership and want their home to reflect their personality and taste. Yes, it’s way more cluttered than what I would want, but who knows what particular significance each of those pieces of furniture and nick knacks hold for them? And the home is CLEAN! So many homes today are filthy and thats no bueno in my book.

As Jim said in #13, and I agree a lighter contracting trim would help the exterior, but again to each his own.

I love individuality, it should be celebrated. We don’t all have to like the same things. And the choices people make in their interior decoration have no adverse effect on others. As I said before, to each his own.
