RLR is mostly sodium carbonate (washing soda), though at higher concentrate or pH than what one normally finds at shops.

There's no mystery to RLR; it's same laundry chemistry used for ages that one has often spoken about. Increasing pH of wash water by using highly alkaline substance.

Alkaline substances tend to cause many natural fabrics to swell, that in turn releases trapped soils, mineral deposits and so on. Alkaline substances also emulsify fats and oils via saponification process which helps cleaning.

Thanks Laundreress!

Have you ever used it? Do you have any tips for use? I purchased it to strip my napkins and tried it twice, once with detergent and once without. My napkins had an off-odor, hence wanting to strip and when I tried RLR with detergent (as directed on the package) the napkins still had an off-odor but less so. It seemed to work better without adding any detergent but maybe my napkins just needed two treatments.

If napkins get stinky, try pretreating them with Shout Aerosol spray which contains dry cleaning fluid then washing them in hot water with detergent and ammonia. Years ago there was a very nice Chinese restaurant decorated in pink and green. The pink napkins were washed in cold water and stank so badly of rancid grease that one could not bring them close to the face.

I agree I don't like purchasing products that are so secretive. I reached out to the company asking for the ingredients and they only provided an SDS which lists sodium carbonate as the main ingredient. They did not provide the ingredients.

Tom, I have that Shout foam. The napkins did not smell of grease. I know exactly what odor you are referring because I've eaten at restaurants with that exact issue. My napkins just had a "whiff" as Launderess would say. It was indiscernible but unpleasant. Thankfully, the smell is gone now.
