I have Book Group this evening, and am running out of time to make what I had first considered, so am probably going to make Apple Crisp (Apple Crumble for those reading on BBC).

I have a selection of apples, and am thinking of using several varieties, for a varied flavour and texture, but what else?

I have dried cranberries, I have golden (sultana) raisins, and some dried cherries. Right now, the golden raisins are ahead on points.

My topping is fairly standard....some flour, more raw oatmeal than flour, some soft brown sugar, and enough melted (real) butter to pull it all together.

Any suggestions? I am making a large, but not too large dish..... about a 10 inch square Corning.

Yum!

I would base your additional fruit on the apples. If they're more sweet in general, use the more tart cranberries. If the apples are more tart, go with the sweeter fruit! Walnuts are always a nice touch, barring some people being allergic to tree nuts!

This reminds me that I have a couple of bags of Trader Joe's mixed berries in the freezer. I may have to make a fruit crumble for tonight's dessert!

Have you ever heard of Brown Betty?

I prefer this to apple crumble, which I find tends to be a bit dry.

Prepare the apples in the base of the dish as you would for crumble.

Melt 5 oz butter in a pan and add 8 oz fresh breadcrumbs, I normally use wholemeal bread for this.
Mix and add 4 oz white sugar
You could also add about 2 oz finely chopped pecans if you have them.
Arrange over the apples as you would the crumble
Sprinke a little sugar over the top - demerera for prefernce.
Bake for about 30 minutes at about 350F or 170C

Best served lukewarm with some creme fraiche

Hmmm I am doing some baking right now - i might make some of this myself :)

Al-

I might, if I had any bread at the moment, but I do not. Bread baking day is tomorrow, so crisp/crumble it is. (Not enough time to make bread AND the betty.)

Thank you all for the suggestions, so far!

It was a hit!

Only one small portion left!

I used a mix of apples, some Golden Delicious, some Mutsu, and ONE Granny Smith.

I went with the golden raisins. They were the source of much conversation.

The book for discussion was Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea.

Thanks again for all who made helpful suggestions.
