One color

I knew this would be another "Avocado sucks" thread but whatever.

Fav earth tone color... AVOCADO
Fav pastel color... turquoise

Least fav color... Almond.

I have always loved Avocado.

My least favorite is Almond. To me, it looks like a white appliance that needs cleaning.

I think

part of the problem so many of us have with Avocado is that it was the favorite color for many many products made out of ABS. This plastic was ubiquitous in the 1970/80's and is still used for lots of things.
Both inexpensive and dimensionally stable, hard to break, resilent and comfortable to the touch this plastic first came in a limited range of colors...one of which was this avocado. Manufacturers seized on it to build all sorts of cheap things...we all remember the Proctor-Silex coffee-pots in this color, the mixers...
Just my two cents, but I think associations play a bigger role in our choices than we are often aware. And my associations with avocado are pretty much "K-Mart Blue-Light Special with coffeee-stains".
Weird, cause real avocados have to be one of the prettiest range of yellow/green/brown their is!

The avocado plastic craze is one I remember well from my childhood. We lived in military quarters at the time, so extensive redecorating was out of the question and the only way we could "jazz up" the property to suit our tastes was by the use of accessories. If it was available in avocado, we had it; kitchen utensils, curtains, lamps and even bathroom fittings such as the medicine cabinet and toilet seat. All stuff that could easily be taken away at moving time, and replaced with the standard issue fittings that came with the house, ready for the next occupant.

We don't look back now and go "Eeewww" at the thought of all that avocado, rather it's something we remember fondly for being at the height of fashion for its time. Styles and tastes are continually changing, so today's decor isn't going to appeal in 20 years time either... it will be history repeating itself all over again.

Guess what I saw at Sear yesterday?!!!

An ALMOND washer and Dryer!!! One of those He3's or 4 or what ever their calling their front loaders.

And what and AWFULL color it was!! And it's a dark one too. I just walked by it and I felt dirty. I wanted to grab a rag and some 409 and wipe it down.

So all you Almond lovers out there...here's your chance. :)

How about wood trim?

In the 1980s Hotpoint UK marketed a range of appliances in colours, including white with brown trim, "spring-almond" with brown trim and an amazing faux-wood called "rich teak". The rich teak effect was available on the Hotpoint Iced Diamond range of fridges and freezers, and also on the Supermatic twin-tub.

So what do you all think - should Hotpoint bring this finish back?

I love stainless steel. It's so futuristic. I like things that point to the future. Always have. I also loved harvest gold and coppertone. In the 70's, my aunt had harvest gold appliances in her kitchen. She had wood shutters with fabric inserts. The antique silk inserts matched the harvest gold appliances. It was awesome!! A former neighbor of mine, had a coppertone refrigerator and combined it with a spanish-themed kitchen decor. That was unique and gorgeous, too. When it comes to color sometimes it's about HOW it's executed in a certain look that can make all the difference. Oh, and the color that I like from the past is aqua but I'm afraid to go there in reality so I just enjoy it in pictures!

I like Roberts picture showing the turquoise fridge, the pink dishwasher and the yellow stove-so cheerful and colorful.would like that-however I HATE all stainless steel kitchens-too much like a lab or a morque to me-to complete a SS kitchen how'bout the SS autopsy table in the center! The all SS kitchens or those with whites and greys are depressing.

Thanks David

I have seen the white Hotpoints from this series in London, never once saw the faux woodgrain.
Takes a bit of getting used to.
Funny, many folks have real wood tops and fronts to their built-ins now-a-days. Wonder if that comes from seeing such ideas back in the early days?
That spinner, by the way, is wonderful.

The faux wood option was short-lived - though Hotpoint was the first UK maker offer machines in anything other than white. You can still find the occasional teak-effect Hotpoint Iced Diamond frigde-freezer on ebay.

3100 rpm - not bad eh?

Thank you JasonL, Cleanfresh, and Spats. I was beginning to think that I was going to be the only one who would stick up for the 60's & 70's.

a "new" metallic finish/color

I see the Jenn-Air line has now brought out "bronze." Since an awful lot of the supposedly "stainless steel" finishes are really jusat polished-then-brushed, inexpensive sheet metal with a clear plastic film atop to simulate stainless's soft, smooth hand, I'd bet this "bronze" is essentially the same, but with a tinted film to mimic the bronze color. The best stainless is "real" stainless on commercial-grade appliances - those bearing the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) seal as required by many states for use in commercial kitchens.

Favorite I wish they'd bring back - turquoise. I like many of the pastels Elmira Stove Works is putting on their Northstar branded, "vintage-look" appliances. See 'em at the following link:
