Hi all,

I used an Antonio Merloni product for the first time this week in Dubai. When I went into my apartment I was a little disappointed to find this Ardo machine there instead of a nice swanky Samsung which I had last time,

I fiddled with the machine and discovered straight away that the drier didn't work, no matter what way I tried, it didn't work - reminded me of my Indesit which I had from 1996 to 2000 which did the same thing, the drier knob didn't do anything anymore (it seems that the electronics are not insulated enough from the heat so go wrong).

Anyway, I did my first load in the machine and noticed how quiet and smooth it was on the wash, It has an induction motor with maximum spin of 800RPM.

The drum has the awful shallow 4 paddle design, I remember first seeing these in the Servis (same company) I saw in Comet and wondered how it could clean clothes and I can see how appauling it is on low loads - the clothes just go around and around in a bundle, not really doing anything - I can see why it was used on the Dyson adverts.

The machine has a mix of traditional dial and electronic control which is why when you manually click the dial, it doesn't always do a change straight away.

The machine is very stable on the spin cycle UNLIKE my AEG OKO Lavamat which thumps about near enough on every spin cycle, this Ardo machine didn't shake once. The only problem with this machine is that it seems that the bearings are on their way out (Common in Antonio Merloni) the machine was horribly noisy on spin cycle as the bearings rummbled so loud. For an 800RPM spin, the machine did very well and I just hanged up the items in the kitchen and they were dry by the next day, sometimes a few hours later the items would be dry.

The pump is VERY noisy and slightly annoying but hey. The programme symbols leave a lot to be desired and you have to guess what they mean.

The dial I noticed was in the same programme sequence as my old Servis from 1983, perhaps Antonio Merloni copied the programmes for their machines. The Servis Slimline Electronic ---- I cant remember the number, it had square door and SpinCare drum and looked very much like a Quartz 610 I think but mine had a dial on it - it gave us a lot of problems and had to have 3 x new motors and the bearings always rattled on unbalanced loads, the machine used to shake violently out of its spot in the kitchen sometimes - this was a Pre Antonio Merloni machine and was just as horrendous, I hear though that others loved their Servis from the 70s 80s so maybe we were unlucky with ours.

I can't say that I am disappointed with this machine, it has been ok but of course I have used better. I like how quiet and stable it is on the spin but low loads are not that good due to the paddle design.

Hi

I believe the UK model is the Servis Caress. My sister has a Caress 1000 and amazingly with 3 kids causing it to get a lot of use its still going strong without any repairs.

Hi Mark,

I guess the induction motor and low RPM helps it when it comes to longevity. I remember the Servis Caress very well.

I hear though that these machines have problems with the bearings. This machine I had in Dubai indeed had bearings problems of some sort as when it spinned it was so noisy, I was worried as I did my washing at night around 2am or so and didn't want others in their apartments to hear - though I think there was very good sound insulation there LOL.

The machine is good with its water levels and rinsing, better than my AEG I think as my AEG uses such a small amount of water it doesn't help with rinsing too well.

I guess Antonio Merloni going out of business says a lot about the quality of their products, which is a shame as they could have potential if they had done things differently and indeed a lot of businesses sourced their machines for use such as the kitchen companies etc.

Hi,
On many Antonio Merloni machines of this era you had to press the half load button to get the dryer to work.
Did you try this?

Tom.

Hi Tom,

No I didn't know this so didn't press it. That's a real bugger as I could have used the drier. I thought that the dial had to be turned - like my older 1996 Indesit to activate the drier. Oh well never mind.

Yes its unbelievable that this cheap Servis machine with all its faults will still outlast the latest top of the range machines from AEG/ Electrolux.

The reason you have to have the 1/2 lo0ad button engaged is that the machine is only meant to dry the equivalent of a 1/2 load.

So to progress from wash to dry or to dry only, you 1/2 fill the machine, engage 1/2 load (logical) set cycle and start...and the machine will wash and dry or dry depending on what you want it to do....

But I doubt many people would guess that you have to press the half load button to engage the drier. Don't you think that they should have a dry symbol on top of the half load symbol? It would help if the makers could make the controls more easier to understand. I hate machine that have stupid symbols. That's the reason why I love my AEG, you do not need the manual, the fascia explains all in itself!!

I'm not sure how others use their washer driers but I would do a full load and then seperate the load at the end of the wash cycle and dry the items that I need, I would not waste resources by doing a half load just so I can dry items straight away.

I just prefer my full size 6kg Indesit drier that I use after doing a full load in the AEG.

My older Indesit washer drier, drying fuction used to come on just by turning the knob as other washer driers I have used. Trust the Antonio Merloni to be different, the apartment staff didn't even know.
