I was asked my opinion about picking up this Hotpoint electric dryer for a friend.

What model is this and what is its approximate age?

The donor (free on craigslist) says it makes intermittent squealing when drying. What's the most likely cause? Is that an easy fix on this?

Thanks

tell them to ask an experienced repair man who knows vintage machines...

anyone with experience would know this is a Hotpoint Dryer/GE clone from the 80's, standard capacity, 2cycle/3temp...

for noise, most likely the bearing needs cleaned and greased....and/or the drum glides need replaced....

Squeaking HP-GE Dryer

Is most often a worn out rear drum bearing, at the least you need a new Teflon bearing insert and a shaft if to is worn or scored.

The front slides are also a possibility, if they are completely worn down to the metal you may need a new drum.

The rear bearing should not be lubricated at all, the felt on the front slides can be lubricated with silicone oil.

Nahhh

Ehhh... my best friends mother gave me one of those. It was a 1986 model. She had the matching washer. The dyer squeaked, struggled, and stalled. It also overheated. I didn't like it and sent it back to her. The tub would get scorching hot !!! Then I had a GE dryer overheat from the early 80's I think they are dangerous dryers. I like Kenmore,Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, Estate, and Roper dryers the best.

GE Dryers 1957-mid 90s

Paul you are right on the money, these were ok dryers at some points during this time period, but after WP got their new design going in 1966 after this time these GE-HP dryers were too small, too hot and just crude, I will still rate them above the MT HOH dryers.

But today they are basically museum pieces are a testament to how cheaply GE could build a 1/2 way decent clothes dryer.

But this is a group of appliance collectors and as such we should know better when selecting vintage appliances that we want for are own use.

Maytag dryers sucked too!!

I'd have to say I'd pick the vintage GE dryer over the Maytag. Those dryers took a solid hour and a half to dry a load of towels VS any whirlpool or Kenmore at 45 min flat those dryers kick ass !!

I guess it depends on the circumstances.  Our HOH DG806 got a full load of towels perfectly dry in 45 minutes or less, even though they had been spun out at not-so-impressive A206 washer RPM.

I agree that the WP design is probably the best ever, and we had a Kenmore pair for a few years, but I've never understood the HOH bashing.  That 806 was the best dryer I've ever owned.  Quiet, fast, efficient, and no dryer could be any easier to use.

I have to say I've used GE dryers twice, and didn't like either one. One was older--say ca. 1970--and the other was a Hotpoint similar to the one pictured above. It seemed like both took forever to dry, and didn't seem to get as hot as a Kenmore. There may, of course, have been some issue. I never made much attempt to figure that out--both dryers were "there" because they were provided as part of a rental. (I did make some effort to clean lint out of the Hotpoint.) Oh, yes...the Hotpoint also had a squeaky noise. I can't remember for sure, but that noise might have been intermittent. I can't remember for sure--it's been a while, and frankly that Hotpoint is not something I really have an interest in remembering.
