Are Old School Hotpoint Dryers Good to Have? Intermittent Squealing

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

My family had a GE dryer with a Filter-Flo washer before getting a Kenmore, which a moving neighbor had and didn't want to take with them for some reason. From what I remember about that dryer, it dried too well and I don't remember any problems with it (but then again I was around 10 when we got the Kenmore).

The heating element is directly behind the drum so I think that's why things were hot to the touch in 30 minutes. God forbid if you had to pull out anything with a metal zipper or button. I don't recall setting the timer beyond 40 minutes, even for large loads of towels, jeans and other super-absorbent things. A minute over and that thing was going to cremate the laundry. The WP/Kenmore dryer that came after it was not as "fast", though I have basically a 2016 version of the old 1966 design, (also the same design as the 1994 Kenmore my family had) and it does well.

The GE I grew up with was a late 1980's model just like the Hotpoint, so it was placed at the time period where GE was known for building decent stuff, if not one of the best depending on the category (and opinion). Now that I am all grown up and I'm a homeowner, I skipped GE when I went appliance shopping. Couldn't picture crossing GE off of my list when I was a kid as the Filter Flo and the Potscrubber impressed me. Everyone's quality slipped but GE and Frigidaire seemed to be affected the most.

Grandmother had a 60's GE dryer and to my knowledge it NEVER required any service the entire time she owned it which was over 40 years!  My 98 GE has only had the front bulkhead sliders replaced and dries really fast.  I've never cared for WP dryers because of the way the heat stream travels inside the drum although they certainly do last a long time. My first dryer was an old $50 WP dryer that worked just fine except when I dried comforters  in it and had to take the load out, turn it around and stick it back in to let it dry the other side.  My GE will dry it completely with no intervention from me.
