I haven't heard much about Maytag's MFR series, but I do know that around the time when these were made that Maytag had already stopped making top loaders to focus on front loaders. I would like to know if these washers are REAL maytags or not (and if not, who manufactured them). I've posted the tags for the first three washers to the right of each of them, but couldn't find the tags for the last two washers.

Maytag Neptune [ Front Load ] Commercial Washers

These were quite popular and held up quite well, My Brother Jeff maintained a condo building that had 16 of the coin-op Maytags in it and they kept them over 10 years which is about as long as MT DC or even SQ TL commercial machines would have lasted in the same use.

These 16 MTs were replaced by 16 WP built MT Commercial TL VMW machines about 5 years ago which have been a disaster in terms of performance and reliability

Why is it that the VMW machines are so unreliable, in your opinion?  I think I went to this building with Jeff shortly after the new Maytags were installed, we played with one of them.  Has WP improved some of the components in the design as they did with the "commercial" labeled top-loads for the home market?

You learn something here every day!

Were the commercial Neptunes mechanically identical to residential machines or were certain components beefed up?

I've used one of the machines shown in your first photo a few times at a local laundromat. I was pretty impressed with the machine overall. The simplicity of a hard mount machine is pretty awesome.

I have to admit the idea of drilling holes in my basement floor came to mind after a few times using this machine.

Commercial Neptunes were common here and there are still some around.

One thing they do that home machines don't...tumble for a minute after the final spin.  Perhaps this is so fewer socks are left stuck to the top of drum for people to miss.

Some of the home models run a fluff.

Did not know that.  I've only used a 5500/6500 and the commercial one.

Does the MAH4000 (and prior) also only do one moderate-speed spin before the final rinse?

I used to see Neptunes in laundromats quite a bit. Never used one though. I always preferred using the hardmount machines. My local laundromat has a 40 pound Speed Queen that could probably clean anything, it does 2 washes and 3 rinses and does a very good job. Her two 60 pound Dexters are set to only do 2 washes and 2 rinses and it doesn't fill up as much as the Speed Queens do and I wasn't as impressed with them. My other favorites are the soft mount Speed Queen front loaders.
