Ariel Bio Liquid best on test Which? January 2008

Hi Folks,
I received my January 2008 edition of Which? Magazine this afternoon.

In this issue Which? tested 25 liquid laundry detergents biological and non biological.
Ariel Bio Liquid was the best on test scoring 67%, Ariel Sensitive (Non Bio) is the best among the non bio detergents and number two overall scoring 59%.
Persil Small & Mighty Bio scored 52% with Persil Small & Mighty Non Bio scoring 49%.
The worst scoring detergent was ACDO Miracle Liquid scoring 35%.

Note: Persil in the UK is a Unilever brand.

Interesting thanks for the info! Ariel is definitely the best liquid out there at the moment.

Do they score the Colour liquids too?

What does the 67% represent - just how good it cleans or does it mean value for money etc. as well?

Are you able to post the whole list of what liquid was at what position? I am interested in how the other liquids performed as liquid is my main choice at the moment rather than powder.

No this test was just Bio and Non Bio liquids no colour varients were included in the test.
Yes indeed Ariel came first in the Which? powder test earlier this year.

Daz liquid scored 49%, it lost points as it struggled to remove fatty stains.

Surprising to see all those cheapo own-label brands got better results than Persil, Daz and Surf.

Seems like those Small & Mighty versions could do with a bit of improvement.

I wonder if P&G have held off launching concentrated liquids because they can't make them quite as good as their regular liquids yet? I'm surprised the supermarkets have launched their own copycat "small & mighty" ranges before P&G.

Surprising to see the difference in Ariel Sensitive and Fairy Non-Bio, I always assumed the would be pretty much identical products.

It's interesting actually, Persil and Surf S&M versions appear to be in rather low supply in most Irish supermarkets. It's always that way with liquid launches here, they initially do a big marketing drive and then the uptake is poor and then they kinda die back to being given quite little shelf space relative to the powders.

It seems to me that liquids are unlikely to be as popular as powders here anytime soon. They're just messy and give no cleaning advantage.

Powder - into drawer - machine on.. End of story

All this messing around with measures and dispenser balls etc is just more hassle than it's worth!

Liquids - good for top loaders!

I would go on to say that I can understand why liquids are more popular in the US. Top loading machines handle them much more easily as you can just throw them into the water and it eliminates the need to dissolve the powder into the water. With a front loader, powder is the obvious default choice.

Having a heavy liquid dispenser ball rattling around in my aqualtis kinda wrecks the Ultra Silent ambience too!

At least S&M can be dispensed through the drawer.

If I do use liquids I tend to throw them into the back of the drum anyway rather than use a dispenser ball.

I have to agree with the stats, Ariel liquid is excellent, I prefer using liquid detergent, i like how it rinses out better too.

Currently using bold liquid atm and thats just as good!

Though it doesn't suit everybody i prefer it!

Powder detergents

hi david could you post a copy of the washing powders from the June 2007 issue of which? i would like to see how the shop brands did,

I don't understand how ariel powder can be better than persil, the scent is really strong, i would prefer to use a product that cleans well but doesn't smell really strongly.

Last time i looked Ariel, Persil and Surf were the 3 best buy detergents for cleaning, surf being the best value.

Hi Darren,
Yes Ariel Bio Liquid is an excellent detergent. I find P&G liquids rinse out better than any other detergents I have used to date, if only their powders rinsed as easily!

Persil Powder

Hi Zanussi_lover,
Ariel Bio Powder most definitely outperforms Persil in my experience. Ariel has consistently been the best performing detergent for me over the years and I have been using it for some 20 plus years now.

My Grandmother has Alzheimers Disease which has caused her to loose control of her bowels and bladder, although she uses adult nappies (Diapers) there are sometimes leaks especially during the night. To cut a long story short I have some challenging wash loads and I find Ariel is the only detergent that will completely remove the urine (Old lady pee) odour from her nightdress and bed linens. I actually tried a load in Persil on Wednesday past and the odour was still present after a two hour 60ºC Cottons cycle in the Miele, I simply don't have this problem with Ariel no matter what machine I use. I have a very sensitive nose and I can tell you that Ariel does not mask the odour it removes it totally. I have to wonder what else is Persil leaving behind if it cannot remove the urine odour at 60ºC or 95ºC for that matter.

I adore the the scent of Ariel Bio Powder but I find the scent is all but gone after drying just a slight trace remains. If you are finding the scent of Ariel strong after drying try using less or add an extra rinse if your machine has the option. Also bear in mind that overloading adversely effects wash and rinse performance and also leads to a higher bacteria count on the finished load.

I am not by any means a P&G fan boy but I have always found P&G products to be of excellent quality. I have a huge detergent collection with products from Amway, P&G, Henkel, Lidl, Reckitt Benckiser and Unilever.

I see you mentioned Lidl, Have you tried their W5 Formil powder detergent?, i was tempted to get some for university, i wondered if it was any good, i have used the liquid and i loved it, i just didn't like the huge bottle lol, it was too heavy to carry home.

If Ariel had a nicer scent like the old one, then i would use it, it is good on stain removal but its like an air freshner, my friend had a box of it and i could smell it from the other side of the room lol.
