Ariel colour powder

After a lifetime of using Persil,after the powergems fiasco, I tried Daz and then Ariel and found both ARIEL and Ariel colour powders really good not that nasty stench of a few years ago!
Asda sold a 40 wash box of Ariel colour, which I stocked up on, but they haven't had any for weeks now...has it been stopped does anyone know? (would be just my luck once I've converted to it..lol)

It disappeared a while back, then it came back (although only at Asda it would seem) and now I do indeed think it’s gone again, I’ve also got a feeling that the Ariel “Pur Clean” is going (if not gone) too.

Either product may just not have done that well, for the uninformed and blissfully ignorant of laundry, powders do seem “old fashioned” to people and an awful lot use gels and so on, of course we here know very different.

Re the purclean, I think that is probably to do with anyone who is going to go for an “eco” product, they will already have a brand (eg Ecover etc).

Add to the fact that there is a massive push from P&G to convert non previous users to the Pod format, so much so, they have just launched a £10 million advertising campaign to do it. So the cynic in me would say downsizing product variants can only help this.

Update

I rang P&G this morning..apparently, they are no longer making the big boxes of Ariel colour as they don't sell well...they will, for the time being make the 22 wash box, but not the 40 wash!

This goes back to the same as Persil (well theirs are 23 not 22 wash, but still).

Only annoying thing, the Persil/Unilever 23 wash boxes are MUCH better than the Ariel/P&G 22 wash boxes.

The Persil/Unilever boxes have the open top lid that you can reach a scoop in to, whereas the Ariel/P&G have the spout opening which is meant to be poured in to the drawer or in to their dosing cup, either way it ends up making a mess (and I suspect a ploy to make you overdose). I always end up opening them on the seams at the very top, so I can at least reach a scoop in.

Depending on your wash needs, maybe the bigger boxes from Costco or Makro may be better? You can shop online without membership at either.

I don’t think I have ever come out of Costco without some form of detergent product (mind, the same applies to Supermarkets to be fair ).

It's funny you mention 'stench'...

My mum uses Ariel, and I recently noticed that the fragrance had changed yet again. Previously, it had left a pungent fragrance on the items - noticeable when drying hand on towels, etc.

The latest version seems to have quite a nice fragrance - which actually surprised me. But I think 'Mr Alex' did mention the new smell a couple of months ago, when we were wittering on about Powergems, Pur Clean, etc.

Anyway, looking at powder detergents in Home Bargains, I noticed that Daz 'Whites and Colours' apparently now has a small amount of oxygen bleach in the formulation (<5%). I don't think it had that before. Daz 'Ultra Whites' has 5-15%.

And I noticed a few bottles of Persil Powergems too. Probably end of line stock from another store chain... Home Bargains seems to get some cast-offs which were originally intended for Tesco etc. A few years ago, HB had Thornton's Chocs in a display tray, complete with the Tesco logo.

A friend of mine is kind enough to "smuggle" bags of phosphated Ariel out of a neighboring state for me. It has a very nice fragrance which seems to be the same as it was ten years ago and it does a great job of cleaning in my hard water. It is my favorite for loads of mixed-colors. The bags are easy to use although I separate the different detergents into buckets. No problem scooping it out either way.

Or something, since P&G announced back in 2014 that within two years they would eliminate phosphates from their laundry detergents worldwide.

Whatever the intentions

Since P&G has been focusing more on liquid and or pod type detergents, the removal of phosphates likely isn't going to harm their laundry products in any significant way.

Liquid in whole or part laundry detergents can be loaded with surfactants, polymers, enzymes, and a host of other chemicals that will replicate most if not all functions of phosphates.

Daz 'Whites & Colours' Powder

I visited my local Tesco yesterday, and just happened to be wandering down the detergent aisle - as you do - when I decided to look as the Daz packets more closely... a 40-wash and a 10-wash 'Whites & Colours', both with that silly 'sock puppet' graphic on the packet.

The ingredients are different:
40-wash: 5-15% anionic surfactants, no oxygen bleach at all, the barcode started with a '4'.

10-wash: 15-30% anionic surfactants, <5% oxygen bleach, barcode started with a '5'. So, it's more concentrated.

Tesco.com is of no use; the weaker formulation is listed for both products.

And as a comparison: Daz 'Ultra Whites' in my cupboard: 5-15% anionic surfactants, 5-15% oxygen bleach, barcode starts with a '4'.

I’ve found it a struggle to find colour powders in big box varieties for a while now,My favourite was Asda’s own brand, so instead I’ve been buying pods/caps while they’ve been on offer, at the moment I’ve got Ariel colour & style pods 38 wash pack, Persil Ultimate Power Caps in the colour variety 19 wash pack and because I can’t resist a gimmick I’ve bought a bottle of Persil colour powergems, I’m looking forward to trying the Persil varieties, and I’ll be making sure the aqua plus option is used when I do lol

As I wanted to like the Powergems, they just didn’t do anything for me (to be fair I haven’t tried the colour version, I tried the bio/non bio at launch).

Most went in the mop bucket for doing floors and the rest in the bin (but under the liner for fragrancing the bin), in the wash they seemed to stick to the door glass and boot, but in their defence they had always all gone by the cycles end (but a lot of users suffered that not happening) .

I also bought the new Surf Powergems during their launch week, I actually never used them before gifting away.

Saying that, as we know, detergent products are always being tweaked, so the Powergems may well have been tweaked since launch on the back of user reviews, but it is a costly hobby to keep buying something you may not like to see if they’re any better lol.

However, I really like the new Persil 3 compartment Pods (after cleaning and fabric care, I’m driven by scent) and these smell really nice (only have the Bio ones at the moment).

But by far my favourite smelling detergent available today is the Ariel 3in1 pods (any variant). But I sure do miss Ariel Alpine and Bold “Active Fresh”

Bear in mind that EU Ariel and Latin American Ariel may share the same label but they're often totally different products.

I don't think Ariel in this market has contained phosphates for a very long time.
