After much hemming and hawing, Mrs. Volvoman and I bit the bullet and purchased “Ariel Multi”.

Here are our initial impressions so far…

1: This is a big box. According to Procter & Gamble website, it should be able to provide us with 95 loads of laundry.

2: In typical P&G fashion, the measuring scoop is huge. I guess this is fine if you have an old-school top load, washing machine, or use a commercial laundromat. I definitely would not use an entire scoop for an HE machine.

3: Appearance-wise, standard P&G detergent powder; white with blue specks.

4: Scent? Again, this is a P&G product we are talking about. It is strong. Bringing it home from the store, we could smell it wafting from the trunk into the interior of our car. But it is not a bad smell. This is not like those sickly sweet fragrances that P&G is trying to foist upon us. It is a “sharp“ fragrance – Mrs. V said there was a “minty” undertone to it. I thought it smelled like a mix of early 90s Oxydol with current-day Cheer powder. And yes, there is definitely a mint undertone to it. There is definitely nothing else like it in the current Tide/Gain powder stable. It’s very much a classic “detergent” scent.

5: Sudsing? Moderate. There was definitely some suds forming in the washing machine and this was using cold water. I would not trust using it with hot water in a front load or HE machine.

No idea about cleaning power just yet. I’ll post an update later today, as I had a shirt in that wash with a grease stain on it (Mrs. V will state that my shirts eat better than she does…).

Interesting a detergent marketed for cleaning hard surfaces not only has an AOB system but contains OBAs.

Ariel Multi seems more like "non-bio" type of laundry detergent than anything else. Would be interesting to see if pH level (in dilution) is within normal range of laundry detergents sold for domestic use.

More on Ariel Multi

An update on cleaning power - average, at best. It did a decent job on grungy kitchen towels, but it did not fully remove the grease stain on my one shirt - even having used a pre-treater (Shout aerosol). I re-washed with Liquid Tide, and the grease stain came out.

Our guess, is that's probably fine for regular, everyday laundry (towels, sleepwear, light-to-non soiled clothing). But for the big stuff, a more...robust...product (Liquid Tide, German Persil, UK Ariel Liquid) is needed.

Ariel has a terrific scent for clothes in the summer-time. As Mexican brands go, I find Viva to be the strongest when cleaning greasy things. I have some older formulae with phosphates, so that is for warm-hot water wash. I still find that a cup of clear ammonia boosts the grease-cutting ability of the detergent----if you have good ventilation.

The habit of using hot water is hard to break. I am learning, though. I find that Tide Oxi powder in tepid water does well here in SW Virginia, with our hard water.
