Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I picked up a 1st generation Dial-A-Brew at one of our local thrift stores about a month ago for $2.99 + $.16tax=$3.15. Works and looks like brand new. They make better coffee than anything you can buy new IMO.

My parents had the predecessor to Dial-a-Brew (no dialing anything, just a plain basket) and it made great coffee for many years.

The filter discs that this type of coffee maker uses are the only weak spot, as the design can allow some grounds to get through. I thought that particular type of filter was impossible to find but I think on Tim's thread about his $2.99 find it was mentioned that they're still available.

I still see carafes (the shape of the earlier ones is a little more sleek but they should still work) and sometimes entire machines out there at thrift stores if you end up needing to replace any components down the road.

Enjoy!

We had one in the office for quite a number of years. In Canada they were Philips Dial A Brew, Philips being the manufacturer. Not sure why in the US all Philips products were called Norelco

I have 2 of the 1st version with the sleeker pot as Ralph mentioned, and neither one has an on/off switch. The unit needs to plugged and unplugged.

Norelco Trivia

From the early 1940s, Philco was legally able to prevent Philips from using the name "Philips" on any products marketed in the USA, because the two names were judged to sound similar. As a result, Philips instead used the name Norelco, an acronym for "North American Philips [electrical] Company." Philips continued to use that name for all their US products until 1974, when Philips purchased The Magnavox Company. Philips then relabeled their US consumer electronics products to the Magnavox name, but retained the Norelco name for their other US products. When Philips bought Philco in 1981, Philips was able to freely use the Philips name for all of their US products, but they chose to retain the Norelco name for personal care appliances, and the Magnavox name for economy-priced consumer electronics.

Is there Norelco anything now besides electric razors? We do have Philips appliances in the US now. I think I have one of those hand held stick blenders of that brand.

I have a Philips electric mixer I believe I got from Pete that is an exact replica of the old standby Hamilton Beach mixers we had in the US, the one with the one piece screw in beaters. I'm not sure how or if those two were related, or if they just had HB build and badge the mixers for them.
