This beautiful 1965 GE looks like the one Steve got out of a Pebble Beach vacation home.  It's all too coincidental.

 

I wonder what's prompting him to pass it along.

 

Too bad it's hinged wrong, or I'd be all over this one.

My mom had a friend with that refrigerator in coppertone---she must have redone the kitchen in about 1963 because she had that refrigerator, a copper tone GE dishwasher and an Americana stove---on the landing going downstairs was a reeeeeally old chest freezer (1950 or so). That ice arrangement seems eminently sensible to me---it was always my job (I was 4 or 5) to dump the ice and I thought myself so responsible! It had the semicircular crisper too.

Yep, That's It . . .

I love it, and more to the point, my wife is disappointed it has to go. Between it, the backup 47 GE and late 70's/ early 80's freezer , we have been having 250.00+ utility bills. They will all be changed out, to my dismay, because I know I'll be buying those appliances again in only 7-10 years, with likely a few service calls, to boot. I will gift these to any member here who wants them, but they will need to go quickly, no place to store them.

Regarding the icemaker, it was disconnected when a previous owner relocated from Santa Barbara, and never hooked up after arriving in Pebble Beach in 1968. We continued that trend, as it needs a hose adaptor of some sort . It will possibly need a gasket also. My wife would just fill the tray by hand, and was content with that.

Free to members here, but gotta be quick, the new one comes Wednesday, she has interest from both both Craigslist, and a local Facebook group.

Steve, thanks for your phone message and your post here.

 

I knew these weren't the most efficient refrigerators, but had no idea that they were such major energy hogs.  That's going to make me re-think my interest in one.   The swing-out shelves may not be worth the added monthly expense compared to my manual defrost '57. 

 

I don't think your '47 GE is as bad with energy as you think, but I understand the logic behind going with new "energy star" equipment.

 

Maybe someone with solar panels will buy the Combination and both they and the fridge will live happily ever after.

GE Bottom Freezer Refs

With Self Filling Ice Tray, These are about the best vintage ref you will ever see, these blow away FDs, and most other brands in performance.

 

These use around 150 KWs of power per month, not terrible for a 19CF FF ref, but about three times what a new ref will cost to run.

 

You can save about 15-20 KWs of power per month by replacing all three fan motors with ECM motors. You could save another 50-60 KWs of power per month by replacing the compressor with one from from a new ref.

The ad was still up a couple of days ago, but I just checked and it has been dropped from my favorites.   I was told they had some interested parties right after the ad began running, so maybe one of those people finally came through. 

 

Otherwise, I think they were going to let the fridge be taken away when the new one got delivered.  Let's hope that's not how things went down.
