ASEA Cylinda 12000 Front Load Washing Machine

Hi guys

I found your forum whilst searching/troubleshooting for my 1988 ASEA Front Load Washing Machine.

It belonged to my Aunt originally & when she passed away, I bought it from her estate in 1999, along with the Dryer. What brilliant machines they are!!

HOWEVER ..... in the last 12 months, it started making 'screeching' noises. If we turned it off & turned it back on again, usually, the noise would stop & the washing cycle continued to the finish.

In recent months, the screeching became more persistent ..... until last week, when the machine stopped mid cycle. The drum won't rotate, tho does move a bit when pushed.

I am guessing bearings and/or bushes? Or have I stuffed it completely??

Our appliance repair man is trying to see if it is economical to repair the machine and hasn't gotten back to me in a week ....... I emailed the UK @sparesonweb.co.uk but they won't supply outside of the UK. (I have nieces there who may be able to source them for me if I can't find any here in Aussie.)

I understood that ASEA had been taken over by Asko - but they don't have any parts.

Does anyone know where spare parts may be sourced within Australia? I'd love to get the machine working again - as it was the Rolls Royce of machines back in the 80s ......

I was going to mention the Asko angle, but you've already gone down that path. If they don't have the parts, I'm not too sure what your next move might be.

I heard back from our Appliance man & he says spares are impossible to get & suggest replacing it with a new machine

I will keep searching for a little while & hope something comes up!

Sounds as if your bearings have gone. Not an easy DIY task but maybe can be done if your service man declines. Could also be the belt or brushes.

Think you've already tried this but... take hold of the inner tub by putting hands at "12 noon and 6PM" then give a firm but strong shove up then down. Repeat at 3PM and 9PM hand positions. If the drum has major play then it is likely the bearings.

can you post a picture of the control panel of your machine?

I have some spare parts for Asko 12004 machines including a complete drum/bearings/back plate assembly.

I suspect that it might be the same as your machine.

It is very late so I will finish now but I will give your machine some thought as to what might be wrong. (Probably bearings but it could be something else.) Perhaps you could post a video of the noise if you can coax it into going again?

I'm in southern Victoria so a long way from you, freight costs might be a killer.

I bought my mother a Cylinda 12000 new in May 1988. Fabulous machines.

I have a couple of questions about the screech.

Where does/did it occur in the cycle?
- during fill
- during washing/rinsing action
- during spin

In my mind, turning something off and on again should only reset components controlled by the electronics of the machine. If it is a bearing or similar issue, the noise should continue as soon as the machine is restarted or almost immediately after.

From memory, these machines had a 'brake' that would activate if you lowered the outer door whilst the machine was spinning or prevent the spin from occurring if it was lowered during other parts of the cycle.

It may be worth investigating this angle as a potential cause of the issue as ASEA machines are not known for doing their bearings, though I do acknowledge it's nearly 30 years old.
