If I Can't Sell It, I'm Going To Sit Down On It!

Well Robert don't know how far you are willing to go in sources of revenue streams, but here goes:

Why not set up a section where non-members can post vintage appliance questions including repair information and have it answered by vetted members? Going along the lines of "Fixya" or whatever that site is called a sliding fee could be charged in terms of compensation. It would really cut to the chase of all these persons who simply pay a small "donation" to join the group only to access repair/part information then go. I mean if that is all they are after and not interested in being ongoing contributing members otherwise why not leave em have what they want then move on; after the "House" is paid of course! *LOL*

Just a thought. We have so many members that are literally giving away for free what they normally charge for otherwise.

Only the Falcon Knows

We can offer opinions and discuss the purity of no ads and lots of freebees, but no one has expressed it as eloquently as Kimberly. What's never really said in a clear voice is that having the site costs Robert money. Keeping the site healthy and upgraded requires time. The stress and aggravation of playing referee to a sometimes disrespectful membership cannot be amortized in money or antacids. I support the move and I am pleasantly surprised at how unobtrusive the ads are

Go for Robert, you deserve something from all the B.S that you have endured over the years and your Time.Computers are madding

I have been building my machines and machines for Gamers/Servers for years and trying to make all this stuff work is a NIGHTMARE at times.x86/Java/Linux and I just bought a 50 buck Rasberry Pi system for the storm of A.R.M. that I know is coming and

might even dethrone x86..

Oh, now I see how it is.

A few weeks ago I suggested that more people "contribute" and several of you proceeded to have fits. Actually I've suggested it more than once and the fussbudgets either didn't notice or didn't say anything. And some suggested I was stating "policies", which was not true.

Now it seems that raising money is OK with some of you, even though not all that commented and excoriated me have said anything, not that I care. If you haven't anything pleasant to say to me, save it. I won't listen or respond.

Robert, I support you in whatever you need to do. You site is wonderful and I look forward to reading it everyday.

Thank you all for the ideas and feedback. Laundress I will check out Fixya, I've never been there before, when I have some time next week. Malcolm I'm not sure what you mean by rules or those set by whom, so if you want to elaborate I might understand better and be able to answer your question.

One problem I see with a "Fixya" type area, is that there are times no one can agree on a repair.

Should a Maytag electronic dryer be grounded? Is that why mine isn't shutting off? My 1969 Whirlpool washer makes a funny sound, and sometimes leaks, what is it?

Sounds like Pandora's box to me.....

Rules

Robert,

I thought there was some tax law or something about being a .org as opposed to a .com or something.  My memory is fading fast...

I am certainly not opposed to the "ads" and as a matter of fact if they lead us to vintage machines that pop up on ebay or CL, that would be awesome!

Long before

your decision, Robert...

...I just wondered why more people wouldn't contribute something - like PBS stations - to help support this site and value it exudes. I found help that you can't put a price on - not one, but many who have experiences in many appliances, not just washers and dryers...and many other subjects and topics that can be of help.
Whatever additional revenue gets generated...enjoy it Robert. In time, the money will help keep aw.org going and improving, I'm sure.

and BTW ...I went to Fixya. Better to look elsewhere, no one reads and understands the questions. Anyway -

Good luck and go for it !

Robert, you've always done good work.

What if I want to be a paid member
AND
recieve ads, but only ads from the Dutch and Lithuanian markets. See I need a good new Lithuanian washer.... and the Dutch make good soap, so...

any advice?

Malcolm, soon you won't be able to remember that you forgot.
Or remember what it is, you forget.
And possibly forget what remembering is.
Or remember that your forgetting to remember.
Worse yet, that you forgot how to remember.

I'd pity you, but you'd soon forget that, too.
When you look in the mirror, can you ascribe a name to the image you see.
Do you remember, this might be a stretch, is it YOUR name?
I'll always remember you fondly, which is probably more than you'll do for me.
Frankly, I'm amazed you found your way to the site.

Missing his point...

I believe the reference to fixya.com was in the sense that we could make something better than fixya.  I believe the knowledge base here is leaps and bounds above anything else on the web.  Don't you?

Surprised people don't donate more?  Why?  Was there a telethon?  I'm sure if Robert posted that this site was in need, members would step up.

Malcolm

Excellent!

Robert,

I think you've made an excellent decision, and I hope the ads are successful. I second everyone else in saying that you have created a fantastic site.

Best,
Sarah
