Back in December 2017, I wrote a post in search for information as to what happened to the powder form of DIP-IT stain remover for cleaning coffee percolators. It appeared the product was discontinued by Reckitt & Benckiser sometime in 2015 or 2016, but I couldn't find solid proof to confirm this. By the time I had started looking for Dip-It powder (Dec. 2017), the only products I found available were through ebay from sellers who still had some leftover stock. Those sellers apparently knew it was a discontinued product which had a certain demand, so it was priced accordingly... $30 for a 5 oz box. And many people were buying it at that price when I'd search completed items. I ended up buying one of those boxes then because I wanted to see if it worked as well as as everyone said it did. Indeed I was not disappointed. It worked excellent compared to other similar products. It cleaned my stainless steel 6-cup Farberware percolator like new without a trace of stain. I couldn't say that with KAF-TAN, or baking soda, or vinegar, etc. Having just this single 5 oz box, I knew I'd have to be very conservative with it's use then eventually be back to nothing.
Now its April, 2018... Last week I decided to search for DIP-IT again on ebay just to see what the status of Dip-It powder was. To my surprise, I stumbled upon what appears to be a "new" product. DIP-IT XP, made by EcoLab of St. Paul, MN. The product appears to have become available as of this past January. It's made in USA and sold in a 1.75 lb. box. It seems to be targeting a commercial market, restaurants and the like. As of now, ebay seems to be the only place to find DIP-IT XP. There are just a few reviews of this product, all from 2018. It's not available on Amazon (yet?). The 1.75 lb. box can be had for about $15 + shipping from various ebay sellers. I bought a box. Works perfectly like the previous Dip-It powder and has essentially the same white granular characteristics. Searching the MSDS, both products are basically the same ingredients. (Reckitt & Benckiser varied the ingredients slightly over the years per various MSDS I could find between 2002-2015)
Interestingly enough, EcoLab was the original creator and manufacturer of Dip-It. From my research, the product came out in the mid 50's, known as "Magic Dip-It". The manufacturer, "Economics Laboratory" was the former name of the company until they changed their name to EcoLab in 1986. They must have sold the Dip-It line to another manufacturer sometime in the 90's, as Reckitt & Benckiser was the manufacturer since about 1999/2000. Before Reckitt & Benckiser, another company called RCN Products owned the rights to the name and made it, but I'm unsure how long that lasted. So apparently it's back to being made by the original company. Thought you all might find this interesting and now you have a supply of Dip-It powder again to keep those percolators sparkling clean!
