What's your opinion on the Frigidaire Flair range?

There's one for sale close to me, and I'm thinking of getting it, but it's condition is unknown.

What are the common problems that go wrong with these ranges, besides being 'outdated', that someone would get rid of it.

They say it's for 'parts only' and I'm thinking that just means that it probably does work, but needs repairs and the seller doesn't want any hassle.

It's a 30" single oven model.

Any info would be appreciated!

Dear Tim "I'm Standing at the Crossroads of Love&#34

Jones ,
It might be a good "2nd" range; or fine if you want your period kitchen to be well rounded. The actual stove top is
low for my tastes, plus it's a pita to reach under if you need
something from the utensil storage cabinet. I don't think they
are any more subject to problems than the average range. The "speed heat" and thermostatic/heatminder burners
are probably nearly impossible to obtain or have properly
functioning, if it has either or both. But they are fancy looking appliances!!! My 3cents.

At first, I thought the Flair was kind of strange-looking. But now it's grown on me and I kinda like it.

Ideally, my dream kitchen would have a counter-top stove and two matching wall ovens.

But this isn't my kitchen I'm wanting it for. It's for dear old Mom. She has tired of the POS GE gas range and its problems. She's also ready to switch to electric because Propane is so expensive.

She does enjoy vintage appliances like I do. Perhaps not as much, but she did show interest in the Flair when I showed her pictures. She especially liked the eye-level oven with glass door.

I would love to get her a nice standard 40" electric with double ovens, but cutting out cabinets is not an option. I don't like the look of older 30" ranges much. Then I found the 30" Flair and thought if it works or I can repair it, she would like it.

Any thoughts and opinions you have about the Flair would be appreciated.

I got my 1962 Flair from the original owners estate, it was well used, but functions fine. The only realproblems, like stated would be the heat minder and speed heat burners, but a regular burner would fix the problem. The only thing I dont like is the oven isnt very deep, its only as deep as the width of a sheet pan.
Overall it is a nice range and it gives you the extra cabinet space underneath for storage

Well everyone,

The Flair seller finally got back with me.

They are not completely sure what works and what doesn't.

To boot, as they were removing it from the house, they broke the oven glass.

Now, considering that the availability of parts would be pretty slim, I'm thinking I might need to pass on this one.

I would like to have it, but....

What do you think????

i picked up this

double oven flair stove last year and absolutely love it! some parts are still out there if you hunt and peck, luckily mine works well. only the clock motor is inoperative.

i also had the same stove minus the pull out burners in my old house and used it for 17 years with no problems.

i know there are several websites devoted to flair stove owners and lovers. they do have a devoted following. i would not want anything else!

UPDATE!

It wasn't the oven door that broke, it's the glass over the controls. Which shouldn't be too hard to replace.

Flair control panel glass

I have the control panel glass, which I can sell if you are interested!!! Please reply to this thread, looks identical to the 62 flair I parted recently, thanks,Walt

Hey, Thanks for offering the panel!

I might take you up on that.

I need to get the range first. If I get it....

It's the single-oven 30" model. If your panel is for the 40" double-oven model, it may not work.

I'm going to go look at the range tomorrow.

Well....

I went ahead and got the Flair. Even if I never use it, I got it anyway. I had to give $40 for it, but I was ok with that.

It's not in bad shape. At least, cosmetically. It's a little dusty from storage, but not hardly any rust, etc.

The burners are all present including the speed heat and heat minder burners. I have yet to test it out.

After I bought it, I just put it in storage until I have some extra time to look at it.

It's a 30 inch single-oven model. Honestly, it's a pretty neat design.

I might get it out tomorrow and take some pictures to show everybody.

Veteran

I cooked with a Flair for over twenty years. Its amazing how much they can hold and produce, using it for wedding cakes and catering as well as an active family. A dream to keep clean with few crevices and no burner rings, lots of room on the cook top, two ovens and massive storage beneath. It was breath taking in it's gleaming presence and never failed to evoke acclaim. I cook on one anyday. I am the one weird one that loves the seni temp burner, enjoys Frigidaire monotube burners and no oven has ever performed for me like Frigidaire. Try it, you'll like it.
