I stopped in a VV today and quickly spied a nice vintage looking canister called the electro Hygiene Deluxe.by Royal..appeared in great shape altho I didn't turn it on.. the price they're asking floored me $98 (about $75 US)
I know nothing about them.. is it a worthy save for that kind of money? I don't think I've spent more than $20 on any vac I've bought so far.

This was Vacuum Weekend for me at the thrifts. Didn't buy any though. Saw an Electrolux upright almost like mine for 16 bucks. They also had a Eureka with the retractable cord. Looked like it was from the '70s. There were a couple more there but I forgot what they were.
Today, there was a Riccar upright and a very Swingin' Seventies Hoover Convertible. Didn't look at the prices. No canisters.

Hmmm

I didn't know they made a cylinder, that would be a contemporary of the Royal power-tank.
It would be a good save, and a very good machine for cleaning.
I remember an Aunt of mine had an Electro-Hygeine when I was growing up. One in a string of vacuums my uncle bought to try and motivate her to clean.
Nothing worked...
The cleanest place in her house was always the inside of her vacuum.

Love the Thrift Stores!

I had a Royal cylinder, suction only vac for a while some years back. I carried it with me in the car to use for work. It was a great vac, but it didn't hold up in those conditions. The two back wheels came out of the machine body - rivets and all so it eventually ended up in the dumpster. Very powerful and relatively quiet though, it would make a fine machine for in-home use.

I found a Kirby G-3 yesterday at St.Vincent's, not bad condition for $15. It only has the hose with it, no tools. I'm thinking of cleaning it up for my mother - they had the 9 hour Kirby demo and they liked the machine but she called after they left and wanted to know what to do with her sudsy carpets they left behind. Apparently, they didn't explain that very well.

Royal Cylinder: That would make a nice 2nd vac, and Royal even made a Commercial version of that for a time. Way better for commerical use than a Eureka Mighty Mite!
Congrats on the G3 Greg, $15 is not bad for one of those. You can install the new Ultimate G brushroll and clean that up and will have a like new machine!

Mighty Mite

I stopped in a vac shop a few weeks ago, checked out the Sanitaires and saw an offer for a Mighty Mite and Sanitaire upright (one of my favorites) for $319'ish. I asked how much without the MM and just the upright... I had one of those for a while, gave it away - I like the Porta-Power better for that type of vac.

I had a Mighty Mite too...

Mine was from 1986 or 87, can't remember exactly when I bought it. It worked ok but the motor sound was irritating and the bags clogged up fast.
I don't remember its fate.
I do still have my Sanitaire SC888A upright from 1986.
These days when I want to use a lightweight canister I reach for my Hoover Telios or the Airway Saniclean.

I can remember the "Electgro-Hygiene " machines from what would have been the 60's and early 70's? They were so colorful lined up in the "Star" Vacuum stores in the Wash DC area.should have bought one or more-they were very nice vacs.both uprights and canisters.Too bad Royal has discontinued the "Royal Torpedo" canister vacs-I still have a few of them-probably the most powerful canister made. One vac store I dealt with the owner commented that the Royal cansiters used the same motor as some central vacs-that would explain its power. Now the cansiters Royal makes are the "18 pound turkey" look-all plastic and wimpy tools. Those certainly won't last like the old ones!!The vac dealer in this area won't carry them.He loved the Royal older canisters as well.I can remember a "suction" only Royal canister-didn't have a powernozzle, but had all of the other tools on its "on board" carrier.-It also had a three pin plug to satisfy OSHA safety requirements.

Well it looks to use either. Right now there's a small paper bag in there about the size of a lunch bag, it's sitting inside a cloth bag. Now whether you're supposed to use it with just the cloth bag I don't know.. I wouldn't anyways. did I say it's quiet..LOL great for around the birds
