After buying a 500.00 luxury automobile, I can afford to buy some gas. It is the classic 302 fuel injected power plant with overdrive. It gets 14-16 in town and 22-23 on the road, uses no oil and will run an easy 300,000 without a major repair. Quite the economy car when you think about it. I think some Maytag bear would look nice riding in the back seat, don't you? I thing of vegomatic everytime I get in it.

End Of The Line

IIRC remember readking that the Town Car was being discontinued due to poor sales. Apparently besides fleet car services, the only other main for market those boats of a car, are the 50+ demographic.

Anyone remember the televison commercial from the 1970's or so when a white/upscale couple emerge from the country club and the man announces to the valet "Linclon Town Car please". This just after the previous equally snooty couple suffer the embarssement of having the husband ask for some low class car! *LOL* Only other thing I can remember about the commercial is one of the wives having the last line "..... I told you , but you wouldn't listen". *LOL*

Finest cars on the road

The 93 to 97 Town Cars were the best. Traded in my 93 last fall had 380,00 and never a problem. Traded for a smaller car Ford Fusion) as wife has big SUV to haul grandkids when needed. Love the Fusion but miss the Town Car
 
Sweet! It looks like the Night Time version of mine.

Is it a '94? I don't have all the different dates and models down, but I see it has the "notched" grille like mine does.

One of my co-workers has his mother's 1993 Town car up for sale right now for 3 grand. The car is in pristine shape and looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. His is all white and has the 4.6 liter in it though. They are definitely fine automobiles!

Appearance-wise, I like the look of the older, squarish ones that were built in the early 80's with the dual sealed beam headlamps, and the vertical, rolls-royce like grill. Those cars just seemed to have a very diginified, sort of Tuxedo type look about them. They also made great limousines, with their proportions looking very nice. The newer ones built after about 88 or so had more of a sporty, rounded look to them. I tend to prefer the 5.0 engine more than the 4.6 engine too. The 4.6 though gets better mileage, and seems to put out a bit more top-end power. Still great cars no matter what vintage, but the new ones sort of took off the tuxedo and put on a double-breasted business suit sort of.

The Town car's demise might be a result not just of it's own sales, but also of the sales of the Ford Crown victoria, and Lincoln Grand Marquis, as all three vehicles are built on the same body. Most Crown Victoria sales these days are going towards police cruisers and taxicabs. Lincolin T.C.'s are frequently sold for custom jobs for limos and other for hire uses too. Individual, non-fleet sales of all the vehicles are really lagging. It's too bad, as all of those cars are very well engineered cars. People want sportier, higher performing cars these days, which these vehicles mechanically have definitly kept up with, but with their old-school appearance, they just isn't appealing to younger buyers.

I thought the "Demise" of luxuary cars like Lincolin cars were the lux type "SUV" cars made by the same company-and Cadillac.It has been said the sedan production lines were changed over to build the SUVs.At the mall out here there is even a Lincolin Luxuary PICKUP truck!!
 
A long, low Lincoln

Kelly, that's a wonderful car and it should do very well for a long time. Back in 1993/94 I briefly sold Lincoln/Mercury products. I always liked that style as it reminded me of the 1961-63 models.

My dad had an 81 Lincoln Town Car at one time. One a big hunk of car to ride around in. Had automatic climate control. Electronicly tuned radio with (get this) 8 track player. Even had automatic headlights. Those big land yachts were the best.
 
What is also absloutely amazing is the utter lack of traffic in her trip through Washington DC. I guess there was less traffic 40 years ago. Today, even during the daytime hours the city is in a state of gridlock. When a light dusting of snow like in the commercial there falls on the city these day, the entire place is paralysed with gridlock and road-raged maniacs. There are also many more streets and parking lots blocked off these days. One can only get as close as she did on foot, but never in a vehicle. Inaguration week is always a stressful week for my company, because we provide a considerable amount of audiovisual support for the event. To add to the confusion, inaguration ceremonies typicaly result in major roads being blocked off, making automobile travel pretty much impossible.

That is one striking autommobile however, and those are some neat scenes of DC there. That 61 model has a very sporty, powerful look to it, versus the more stately formal look future Lincolns had.
 
'61 Lincoln

Steven, that's a 1957 Lincoln. The '58-'60 Lincolns were the first of the unibody series, an enormous "chinese look" car. Then came the fabulous roundish '61 which changed the story of the brand!
