Australian Hotpoint Twin Tub.

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Gala was Hotpoint's main export name...

Because copyrights restricted the UK Hotpoint name to the UK only until around 1970 (I'm not clear why).

Here in Ireland that exact model in the ad would have been sold as all Gala and other export name models were built in the UK.

Gala was the main export name used in Ireland, Australia and other countries of export but English Electric appears also as well as GEC.

That model appears to be the Gala version of the very rare Hotpoint Supermatic 1420! If you look closely it features the square tub.

Hotpoint

The Hotpoint company did have appliances sold under their name here in Australia, however they were mostly just small kitchen appliances, i.e. toasters, jugs and the famous Hotpoint vertical grill and radiator heaters, you can actually get some Hotpoint gadgets here still, portable air conditioners, electric heaters, etc, but they are just cheap Chinese imports.
I would hazard a guess and say the most popualar and well known twin tub here was the Hoovermatic in it's various forms.
Cheers,
Steve.

Gala/Hotpoint

Hi there

What a great find - I'm not sure that this is the elusive model 1420, though it is rather close - perhaps another unknown variant exclusive to down under? The console is much closer to the 1400 than the 1420 (see attached) so this must be a transitional model - does anyone know if it was made in Australia or if it was an import? If the latter, was it UK made, or a model from F&P in NZ (F&P were producing a licensed version of the AEI Hotpoint 1500 at this stage, marked as an AEI GALA design on the rating plates, so quite probably that they were doing the twin tub too)?

Hotpoint is an American brand of course, long owned by GE - I've told the complex story before, but in the 1960s AEI had the licence to use the name in the UK only, so all exports were sold as GALA - export markets included Ireland, Malta and Australia - perhaps elsewhere, but I don't know. In Australia, other manufacturers had the Hotpoint brand and still do I believe, but have nothing to do with the UK firm. UK-originated Hotpoints were sold there as Gala, GE (more confusion!) and latterly Ariston (as in the US too - now UK-Italian of course). GALA was dropped in about 1972 in Ireland, when AEI got merged into GEC (nothing to do with GE confusingly) and the name licence was expanded. Conversely, Gala was later used for a few 'store-exclusives' in the UK, as was English Electric - another merged Hotpoint brand. Neither appears to have survived the takeover.

The somewhat different 1420 is shown below, close of course to the model in the advert, but also a step closer to the later 1967 design. This model didn't survive long as it featured an unreliable powder-clutch, later replaced with the more serviceable standard form.

Was the 1500 automatic sold in Australia (either as Gala or any of the F&P versions?)

Pretty Hotpoint...

I want one... NOW! LOL! What a nice feed of info and pictures on the 1420. It also tells us that all models before 1450 had a 2850 rpm spin? Then 1450 introduced the design that would stay until the end with 3100 rpm.

Hotpoint TT and Automatic

Hi David

Nathan and I have the opportunity of getting at least one Gala Twin Tub each from an ex-repairer at some stage in the next year or so.

As for the Automatic...YES....it was sold in Australia, but re-badged as a Kelvinator. I've seen one many years ago. I'm pretty sure, but not 100% certain that the automatic was imported from New Zealand, but don't quote me on that.

In New Zealand, these were sold as F&P and they stil pop up on 'Trade Me' in NZ.

Cheers
Leon
