"Bought a home and these beauties were left behind from an estate. Not sure of working condition but the dryer appears to work. The washer fills up but may have an issue with releasing the water. "
Interesting how people often use odd terminology when describing a machine's malfunction.
That was Granny's Kenmore 70 model, in that color ... just the washer. She got a WP dryer a couple years later.[this post was last edited: 8/12/2019-21:59]
Another Kenmore set is going to travel better than 1000 miles to come to Texas. I’ve known it for years but I may be close to admitting I have a problem. I’ve got quite a backlog of rebuilding to do, but if I can ever get at least half of them done I’m going to have a pretty cool setup. If I don’t lookout I’m afraid I will become the next Lee Maxwell. It’s just so hard to turn down these matching sets in such good physical condition. That dryer drum looks perfect. And avocado and copper tone are two of my favorite colors. Although I told myself the next set was going to be turquoise. I had very good luck with the last company on uship but they don’t go to Florida. So if anyone knows a good shipper in that area that will come to Texas, my ears are open. I’m putting another bid on uship this evening.
Thanks! One of these days I’ll have a heck of a museum to show off. Can’t wait! This is only the 2nd time I’ve asked a complete stranger over a 1000 miles from me if they would be willing to wait for a shipper and both times they agreed to my surprise.
Congratulations on getting that wonderful set. My childhood friend's mother had the washer in white, and it was paired with the Match All dryer model that was available then.
So glad you are getting this set. Success stories like this makes me feel better about all the time I spend on the internet looking at vintage appliances!
I have used this couple twice and they have done excellent with both shipments. Danny & Rhonda. Their text number is:
(843) 809-0049. I met them thru U-Ship but I now use them independently. Just tell them you got their name from Bob in North Carolina. Good luck - Let me know what you find out.
They have arrived! Both are in very nice condition as far as the exteriors and drum/tub for being 48 years old. Someone cared enough about these machines to have had the outer tub of the washer replaced with a plastic one at some point. That is they only repair that I can see that the washer had. Pump and cone filter are original. These came from an estate purchase where they were left behind. The new owner tried the washer. It filled and that was it. Looks like these sat unused for quite some time as the washer drive assembly was seized and the reason for nothing but filling. The water level knob was broken and the timer on/off push/pull function no longer works so when you spin the timer to the wanted cycled it is powered through everything. Thanks to Lorain Furniture, these parts including a NOS timer are on the way. The machine needs a bearing and gearcase rebuild as I expected. I ran it through several cycles and it did not leak a single drop of water! I haven’t test the dryer but was told it works. I’m real busy at work right now so don’t know when I’ll have time to finish rebuild, but this is going to be a very nice set. There were some good pictures in the ad but I’ll add a few more.
Granny's washer apparently was a tad older (1970?), had a mercury lid switch. The water level knob broke early-on, replacement was for a 800 to fit into a recess on the escutcheon so it didn't match the original temp knob.
DADoES: I would say granny’s washer was pre 1969. I’m definitely not the Kenmore expert but I have a 1969 Kenmore 800 with the strike lid switch and a 1968 Lady Kenmore with the mercury switch.
Jeannine: Yes I used The Scorpions Trucking LLC from Uship and had a great experience. I turned down one company who accepted my offer but I didn’t like their customer feedback. The company that I chose had great feedback and I spent more to go with them and it was worth it.
Dave: Thanks! I can’t wait to get them cleaned, repaired, and into service again.
Thanks Christina! I haven’t checked the dryer but the washer is going to get a pretty complete rebuild. NOS center post bearings, NOS basket drive, NOS lint filter, NOS timer, and a new belt.. The gearcase will be rebuilt as well.
