How did they accomplish

The burners are little stamped aluminum 6000 BTU things. I think my mom's Crown had drilled port aluminum Harper center simmer burners with the front ones being 12,000 and the rear ones 9,000 BTUs
 
No argument, the Crown would be a better choice.

I wonder if anyone here at aw.org has ever upgraded one or more gas burners on their gas stove? I have no idea, just asking, since you mentioned(TOM), that this nice looking Florence stove is underpowered at 6K BTU's. I would expect that upgrading is not practical or easily feasible(just a passing thought).
 
With gas ranges, the plumbing, valves, orifices and burner heads are so distinct that changing that is an almost impossible project. The little stamped aluminum burner heads could not take the heat of a higher BTU input without melting. In older ranges like the Crown, all of that piping under the cooktop was cast iron. In these, it is aluminum or worse.
