The Worlds Best Airline!

None have better seats for a 6'5" person!!!

They do this every 28 years. I went over in 1981 on a baaahhgain fare of $500 RT! Qantas was introducing new service to Townsville on the new 747 Stubbies from LA.

BTW on the return the pilot announced they were going to test the plane and go up to 72,000 feet. It was cold crossing the Pacific at that height, I was right behind the door and after several hours had 3 feet of Hoar frost all along the baseboard at my seat. The stewardess gave me 3 extra blankets. When you looked up it was dark sky not the pretty blue we see on regular flights.

What a deal that was-- this is even better! GO America GO!

You can't beat the food and the men are HOT! (so are the Women for our STR8 contingent!)

I wouldn't worry so much about the cold at 72,000 feet as I would the oxygen in the cabin. I used to fly the 747 across the pacific and the service ceiling for the 747SP (stubby) was about 45,000 feet. Most 747's fly in the upper 30,0000's in cruise flight.

Above 45,000 feet the cabin pressurization can't hold below 10,000 feet and the aircraft can't grab enough air to generate the lift required to get up that high. At about 50,000 feet you get into what's known as "coffin corner" where the aircraft stops flying no matter how fast or what power settings you are using.

I think the Captain was pulling your leg......

FL420 is pretty damned high for a heavy jet the vintage of the 74SP.
Worn door and window seals can make for a very frigid ride.
I got stuck next to L2 on a 722 years ago and frost was trying to form on my feet. Damn that. Even worse was an old 721F or 707F with the large freight door up on the port side in first. If those seals were worn you were in for a very very cold trip.

Oh, and I wouldn't get too excited about how much room there is in the back of the bus these days, but for that fare you can tough it out.

Amazing!

That's USD $530 return? (AUD $729). With or without taxes? Either way, it seems incredible. We got a promotional return fare SYD/LAX for AUD $971 (USD $705) for travel in June and thought we'd got a great deal - QF must be enticing our American friends to fill up the planes for the return journey.

We've seen some great domestic deals here recently too. It's all in an effort to get bums on seats, as tourism is being very hard hit by the current economic climate and QF is doing it tough.

Sadly they announced yesterday they're laying off a further 1700 people.

By all means take advantage of the fare - we'll show you a great country and perhaps be able to save our flagship airline.

Hi Steve,

You might be surprised how much room there still is in Qantas. When we were in the US a couple of years ago, we had quite a comfy experience in Ecconomy on the way over (Michael is 6'6") We were shocked when we got on an American Airlines plane to fly from SF to NY as the seats were tiny, both width and leg room wise, and we'd never experienced people needing to fight over what food was available on the plane.

So its not as bad as what the standard seems to be in the US, NWA gave us our best flying experience whilst we were in the States.
