Hello all. Been posting and checking in sporadically for the last year or so. Extremely busy at work since the higher ups decided to replace our financial, payroll, and HR systems and implement a warehousing/inventory/work order system. All at the same time despite my recommendation. But what the hell do I know, I'm just the systems analyst.

Anyway, Have some additions to my collection to share soon as well has a couple of cries for HELLLP !!!

Rocky2,

I'm a systems analyst also and just over a year ago my companie's 2 I.T. departments merged into one. We had 2 because one was for a subsidiary company. Anyway, when the departments merged, the higher ups decided that the CIO of the subsidiary company would be the CIO of the merged department and therefore my boss was out! Well this new guy (only 35 yrs old, 10 years experience in the I.T. world) has a completely different philosophy than my previous boss (almost 30 yrs experience) and he wants to get rid of our iSeries (which runs all of our financials, HR, payroll, inventory, purchasing, etc. - and without problems I might add) and replace it with PC based systems. I don't think he has any idea of the work, money, or time involved to do this but like you said....I'm just the systems analyst.

Gary,

Would you believe the system we installed is an iSeries based solution. But then 80% of the staff that use these applications are boomers so they were expecting the same kind of reliability that our 20+ year old VAX-VMS systems provided. Don't get me wrong, we love our PCs. But being a small-scale, public tax-funded establishment, with very tight budget constraints, the cheaper pc-based solutions were not very reliable and those with more horsepower cost 3 arms and 2 legs.

Rocky2,

The company I work for is an agency of the government of Ontario and we are partly funded by them. We are mandated to provide services as dictated by them. We started with a system 36, then moved to a 38, AS400 and now the iSeries. It performs flawlessly. When the 2 I.T. departments were separate, we had a staff of 8 (including the manager) and supported all the corporate applications for 1000 employees. We had very few system (hardware or software) and provided excellent services to our customers. The 'other' I.T. department which used PC based software, sharepoint, etc. had a staff of 12 and supported 1 division of about 150 employees. Their systems were always 'crashing' and the software ran slow. But now we are moving towards that platform because it is supposed to be the newest and greatest technology. Yeah right. I'd rather stick with a technology that is reliable and has proven itself over the years. But again, what do I know.
