I am sorry to see that others have lost pets this week. I am suffering from our own loss. Dennis and I just went on a trip to Minnesota to visit family/friends. We left our two cats at our house with a complete run of the house and yard. We arranged for a friend to come over everyday and feed them.

So we got the call last Thursday that our young cat Bruno has gone missing. We darn near changed our plans and came back early when we heard this, but we told ourselves that Bruno was just being naughty and staying away from the house when our friend was there. Besides, it is ONLY a cat...

But now that we got back last night, I've tried calling and there is no sign of my little Brunie. Dennis and I are so upset we are practically wailing. We so miss our little boy that we raised from a tiny baby kitten.

I am humbly asking other AW members to direct some physcic or spiritual energy our way as we search for our cat. I will be posting signs and will ask KPOA to run an announcement during the morning show.

Here is a picture of our old Kittyboy (brown) and our Bruno (orange). Kittyboy has been howling for Bruno.

David, if you've allowed Bruno to roam outside in the past then I'll bet he's not gone for good. My sister has cats that are mainly outdoors and recently one was missing for a couple of weeks. He's disappeared before, he's quite the independent male and a real charmer, but she got worried this last time he was gone. Turns out he was hanging up the street at a house where some animal fanatics live and they were feeding him. They knew where he lived but did nothing to notify my sister. She discovered his whereabouts completely by accident.

I hope Bruno's disappearance is only temporary. This is harder on Kittyboy than anyone else so do your best to comfort him.

Oh no....well don't give up hope. We had a cat go missing for weeks and just like that he was back as if nothing had happened. And to top that a woman in Calgary lost her kitten some 15 years ago when her kids were small, she got him back last year now that the kids are going to university. She never gave up trying to find him and kept renewing his lost file at the SPCA where he eventually was picked up by animal control.
 
David, Bruno is so beautiful. I hope he has not been stolen. I am so sorry for your loss and hope it is but temporary. Have you tried having Kittyboy do some howling outside to maybe get a response from Bruno? Is he wearing any ID? I know that Hawaii is very sensitive about species outside of the natural ecosystem so I hope he is not in danger.

Maybe he got in a snit at being left alone and decided to go and find other staff. It is hard on a cat not to have staff to take care of the things in life with which a cat should not have to be bothered and also to shower love and attention on demand. On the other hand, when you disappeared, he might have thought you were lost. He then would have started searching for you and might have come across a nice household where he is being well fed. Maybe you could record Kittyboy's cries along with your voices calling him and have it on a tape that you can play during the evening and early night hours so that he will hear that he is missed and that you are back to take care of him.

Sorry to hear that your pet Bruno is missing and hopefully it will come back to you unharmed. I am an animal lover and have 2 cats myself and would miss them deeply if anything happened to them. But to let them go outside when you are away on vacation, how could you do something so stupid like that! Would you leave a child home alone and do that? Not likely. Your family depends on you and I assume your cats are a big part of your family. I will not get on my soapbox about this and what happened, as you are worring enough for what happened. You know the old saying "you don't know what you have until it is gone". Well hopefully this will not be the case, and Bruno will return unharmed. But remember this, the next time you go on vacation maybe you will think twice and leave your cats indoors where they will be safe. Hearing stuff like this really gets my goat as to how stupid some of can be. Sorry guys, but I had to say it.
 
I went through this 2 years ago

and I know how you feel. My around 16 year old kitty is indoor only but she escaped about 2 years ago and went missing for 5 horrible days. I really was heartbroken thinking she'd gotten hit by a car or something. I plastered the neighborhood with signs & that's what finally got her back to me. I got daily calls from well meaning people that saw cats that looked nothing like the picture on the signs I posted, but finally I got a call from a neighbor in the middle of the night on the 5th night that he found her. I ran down the street and sure enough he handed her to me. She was hungry & full of fleas, but she was safe. She still hasn't told me where she was all that time, naughty kitty! Oh and she was found only about a week before hurricane Wilma made a direct hit here. I was so glad she wasn't caught out in that!
I really do hope you find your dear Bruno.

Indoors vs Outdoors

Our cat is almost strictly outdoors. We've had her for 6 years and she has yet to disappear, unless it's because she got accidentally shut inside the metal storage shed or the hot tub frame. She loves to get into the messiest most cobwebbed areas she can find and now whenever I'm doing anything with the access door to the hot tub open, I have to shoo her away or she'll hop in there and won't come out until much later.

My point is, she is fine and quite the homebody even though she has the entire continent at her feet if she so desires. I feel it's cruel to any cat to keep it confined indoors, and I know there are plenty of people who would disagree but keeping a cat confined goes entirely contrary to their nature. My next door neighbors just adopted a cat and they are having a heck of a time trying to keep it indoors. It obviously had outdoor access with its previous owner. I am rooting for the cat to win the battle.

David, please don't feel guilty for allowing Bruno the outside access he's become accustomed to while you were away. Our cat is outside while we are gone and it has never been an issue. I am willing to bet that Bruno didn't decide to run off simply because you weren't home. Cats are quite independent, they know their way around the back 40 better than you do, and as long as they get fed, they aren't likely to stray. I am confident this isn't a situation where Bruno bolted. Outdoor access is definitely a factor in his disappearance, but don't beat yourself up over it. If this becomes a worst case scenario, you should find comfort in the fact that you provided Bruno with an enjoyable life as opposed to no life at all stuck indoors smack in the middle of paradise.

Indoors vs outdoors also

We have 2 black and white tuxedo cats (brother and sister). They have been indoor/outdoor cats since they were old enough to go out (6 months or so). they are the most friendly, sweet, well adjusted cats around. they love to go outside and they love to come in and sleep on our bed at night. They also love to hunt and bring us a variety of birds, bats, and mice. Next time I will tell you about Scott (my partner), the pain pills (after foot surgery), the feathers, and the cat :-). My point is, that cats are animals that need to be outside at least sometimes. They need to prowl around a bit and chase mice and birds - its nature's way. Ours have a cat door and wear a little fob on their collars that unlock it when they approach. That way, they can be in when they want and out when they want - and no litter box!

this instant! Keep calling him , if he hears he will answer.
He knows where home is, he might have gotten trapped in some
body's shed or garage. Keep us posted.
 
Some cats do quite well spending all their time indoors - but usually only if they've been raised that way. Once they get a taste of outdoors, they want to go outside at least some of the time.

One of my favorite cats was lost for about a week once. He must have been trapped in a garage or shed or crawlspace, because when he finally showed up at my door, he was very thin and hungry. But he survived OK from that one. He was a gret cat and it was really hard to see him die years later.

I have two cats now; they are like Yin and Yang. The male spends almost all his time outdoors, especially in the summer. The female spends nearly all her time indoors. She will, however, asked to be let out on a nice evening, but never gets pushy about it. And she will often rattle the screen on the porch window until I come out and join her for at least a bit. My other cat used to do that as well; he'd learned how to lift up the mail slot flap and let it slam down, as a way of getting my attention to get me outdoors.
 
Indoor VS Outdoor cats

Our old Kittyboy was always an indoor housecat. When we moved here we allowed him to go out on the lanai but discouraged him from going out in the yard. He "got it" and would stay only out on our lanai. We thought that it would be easy to train Bruno the same way. Bruno however has an independant streak a mile long. He did everything he could to run out in the neighborhood, in spite of all our scolding, rewarding or squirting with the garden hose. The little devil even crawled through the jalousie windows and pushed out the screen to escape. Veg was witness to Bruno's war for independance while he was here. The cat won. So now we never even shut our door anymore-we just leave the sliding door open about 6 inches wide so the cats can come and go as they please.Frankly, I would have rather come home to find all our stuff ripped off rather than missing our cat.

Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. Dennis and I both feel like he is still alive, just off on a big kitty adventure. I sure hate not knowing for certain. Everyone stories about how cats "do this" at least have stopped me from blubbering every few minutes.

Brunie is just exercising his independent streak. Probably just hanging around the neighborhood looking for puss...uh, female cats. Betcha by the end of the week there'll be two lumps under the covers again. Make sure you keep Kittyboy on the lanai so Bruno can hear him wail.

As for witnessing Bruno's escapades, I remember them well. He'd go wandering off what--5? 6? times a night. I always say the two sounds I'll forever associate with Hawaii are roosters, and David saying "Bruno!" every evening when kitty went a-courtin'

I can't even imagine what you're going through right now. I know the feeling I get when my "Jake" decides to go and sleep in the closet for a while and I keep calling him, with no response. I think, oh, my God, did he run out when I wasn't looking. Then, of course, he stumbles out of the closet, half asleep, with that look on his face like, what? Were you looking for me?

Hopefully, that same scenerio will happen and your cat will come stumbling into the yard with that same expression.

Jake and I are sending messages from Rhode Island telling your cat to get on home!!!

My cat stories regarding this aren't happy, but here's one that rates some mention, because of the happy ending. There is a twelve year old boy down the street that has a young orange tabby tomcat. The kitty went missing, and the boy became enraged and smashed up his dad's living room. The cat was asleep in another room. My roommate can empathise with you quite a bit, that's all I will say. You are in our thoughts. When I sent TomTiger to his job today, I asked him to keep Bruno in his thoughts. We're wishing you the best.

But after a week of torture, Dennis and I contacted Hilary Rennaisance, a pet psychic. She told me that Bruno thinks he is on the other side as he can no longer move his physical body. The psychic was not really able to tell me what happened, but Dennis and I suspect that Bruno may have had a weak heart (he was the runt of the litter.) She told me where I can find his body-her descpiption of the area was very good-but I don't think I want to do that now.

Bruno is finally as free as he wants to be.

While I don't necessarily discount psychics out of hand, since their input has proven to be of some help in police work (but not as much help as some of them would have you believe), don't say a eulogy for your baby just yet. The psychic COULD be wrong.......

I do understand the sad desperation of needing an answer, of knowing what's happened. But sometimes, for whatever reason, we don't always get an answer or any real sense of closure.

So sorry about your cat boy. I have six wonderful cats and
one wonderful dog. I am hoping to post a picture of my Smokey
Smith next month when he turns Nineteen ; he's lookin pretty
long on the tooth , but he keeps hangin in there. A little
over a year ago, I thought he had at least three paws on the bridge ; don't know what he had, but I even ran water to soften the earth near my Rose Patch for his final place.
He wouldn't eat a crumb or lap a lick for about five days and
I was devasted. He holed up outside in an unsusal place for about two and a half days. I finally brought him in , and then
he picked an inside spot to hunker down and fade away, I
thougt. I begged and pleaded with him to eat and tried every-
thing and I wailed the whole time. About the sixth day ,
he started eating and drinking the smallest bits. Finally
he came all the way out of it. After that episode he refused to use the indoor cat box , but adjusted very reasonably to
me creating a business spot out of these white bath size towels that I have a big supply of. If I don't have at least
two seperate locations that have no more than three uses ,
he doesn't hesitate to come and let me know; he usually will
wait until I put out a fresh set for him. Cats are just amazing people. I don't think that your contacting the Psychic
is laughable at all. I think I would be inclined to do that
in similar circumstances. Though it is a grim prospect, if you
can steel yourself to locate his body , it might give you a great deal of comfort to select a special final resting place
for him and have a little service. I am so sorry about your
little Brunnie....
 
My roommate Lana used to live next door, with 10 cats. One day she took me to look at a new car for me, and Isabel, her elderly grey tabby was out, as she did once in a while. We never saw her again. I never have forgiven myself. Lana moved to Vero Beach, FL. in the following January, and her 17 year old orange tabby Macavity walked away forever. Moved her back to Port St. Lucie in April this year, her idiot Vero landlord and family frightened 13 year old Maka, a tom, away with major landscape cleaning and cutting that could not wait another day.(it could) One night Lana dreamed that a young and healthy Macavity came to see her, to let her know he was all right. He was a wonderful old soul, he'd nap on my porch the first time she lived here. Pet psychics, or any psychics are not to be dismissed. Yes there are fakes, but they are the minority. You owe it to your boy to look one more time. Thank you for the update.
 
Frontaloadotmy, Were you by any chance using a clumping litter? A friend who has cats told me that the clay used to make the litter clump has a dust that can be fatal to cats. Since Smokey will not go back to the litter box, I wonder if it has something to do with the litter? Just a thought from a deranged mind. Tom

My own thought is you should do what you feel is right for you. If you think you're strong enough, look where the psychic told you. You may or may not find anything. If you do, then you will not be wondering, is he all right, is he hurt. If not, then at least you know you've done everything you could.

Jake and I are still holding out for a happy ending.

I hadn't checked this thread in a while, sorry to hear of the developments. David, not to be morbid, but I think you should have a look at the suggested location. May not be anything there. In the end you'll likely feel better to know for sure, and perhaps to be able to place Bruno's physical remains to rest properly if need be. But remember, if you do find something there, you'll always have Bruno's spirit in your heart.
