Correct, it is definitely a vacuum return, as I stated above. I too did not want the chore of keeping the brass boiler tarnish free either...So,..I got a stainless steel set. [this post was last edited: 4/8/2011-09:18]

Hey Michael, hope that you will post a picture of yours when you get it.  It really is a very interesting coffeemaker.
