I'm thinking about spending a B&N gift certificate on a Nook, as opposed to an Amazon Kindle or a Sony E-Reader. Now, as a former librarian, I "should" be opposed to an electronic reader, preferring the feel of a good book in my hands, blah, blah, blah. But, I'm really intrigued by the fact that I can have all of these books on one reading device, and save a ton of shelf space in an already space limited home. The Nook starts out with 2 GB of space, but is expandable with MicroSD cards. Prices start at $259.00, which would buy a lot of books, which are, by the by, free at one's public library!

Any one have an e-reader, or has anyone tried one of these?
Perhaps a mosey down the street to my neighborhood B&N might be in order, since they have them there to try. I'll post a report shortly.

I have a Kindle and I LOVE IT!!!!!! it is very easy to use and read on. In the Kindle store there are free books as well as anything else you can want. Last week I got a regular book as a gift, being used to the Kindle I found it cumbersome. Also, look at the Kindle iphone app. It pulls up your current book at where you left off. You can read on the phone, and when you close the app, your Kindle will be where you left off on the phone when you come back to it. Very handy when you are stuck in a doctor's office.

My soon to be 89 y/o father has kindle. It was getting very difficult for him to hold a book for any length of time, he's just wewaring out. Combined with the hardly any weight factor and being able to adjust print size, it's a winner. As well as the portability.

At my job there are two co-workers, one with a Kindle, the other with a Sony E-Reader. Each has had their devices for about a year. From what I've seen so far, I like the Kindle better only because the display was easier for me to read.

Thanks for the link to the Nook information - this is something that I'm going to Barnes and Noble to look into also.

Another concern for me is the length of time that the device holds its charge, when turning it off between uses. My co-workers both said that 4-5 days is the upper limit for their batteries. The Nook FAQ said that 10 days is the typical charge length. Do you know if this is so for "real world" use?

One issue that has concerned me with these e-books is that my understanding is that you don't buy the book, you buy a license to read the book. You can't resell the license, and I've seen some people express concerns that at some point that license might somehow be revoked or expire.

Neither is necessarily a big deal for those who buy best sellers, read them, and dump them. (Take a good look at Goodwill and see how yesterday's best sellers become today's unmovable shelf warmers.) But for those who buy and want to be able to read a book for years, or for those buying specialty books that they want a limited time, and then try to resell (for example: college text books), are still better served by real books.

On second thought (why do these always happen clicking the post button?), maybe I should have said that some people are potentially better served by conventional books. If, to use that college text example, the question is how much loss does one take buying then selling a book vs. buying a license that can't be transferred?

This e-book revolution also has me concerned for the future of the library, which is where I get most of my books.

I heard on a Podcast the other day that there will be numerous versions of these being introduced in the next few months. Wait six months and that iPad will drop in price too. That's what I'm waiting to see although I do most of my book "reading" in audiobooks from Audible.com on my iPod as I can listen while working, at the gym, etc. I love it and am a total Podcast addict listening more spoken audio content that music.
