They make a point that black bears (which can be any shade from white to brown to black) did not evolve as the top predators in their environment and hence have an innate fear. Unlike grizzlies and polar bears (a type of grizzly), also known as "brown bears", which are far more aggressive and dangerous than black bears.

Where people get into trouble with black bears is:

Trying to take food from them

Feeding them by hand

Getting between a mother bear and her cubs

Ignoring the danger signs of an angry or deranged bear

Still, they are powerful wild animals and whenever I backpacked (back in the '70's) in the Sierra Nevada, I would search for quite a while to find a camping spot where I could safely hang my food sack from a tree branch that would be relatively bear-proof. I would also make a lot of noise as I traipsed down the trail, so that the bears could flee without an unpleasant confrontation. Worked for me.

Here I was thinking

That this was about wiping off the machine at the gym when you left it, or thanking the host after the party, or showing up only 15 minutes late to Tea Dance.

It's interesting that so many animals, including those in the wild, have a code, or sense, of what is and isn't appropriate behavior. Humans who understand these codes seem to do much better when interacting, voluntarily or otherwise, with such animals.
