Well I cut the video down in size and tried to upload to youtube but it wouldn't work...I didn't have time to investigate further. The video is 6.5 mb - is that too big for youtube?

I live close enough to the center of town that nothing bigger than a raccoon will come to visit the back yard here. And those raccoons can be a big problem, as I'm sure some of you have heard me recount.
I don't think there are any bears in the hills around the Bay Area. There are mountain lions, though; they've been sighted a number of times and have attacked lone joggers or bicyclists on rare occasions. Why, I don't know, because there are plenty of deer in the hills as well.

I have lived where I am now for 18 years and this was the first time that I have seen a bear so close to my house. I do live in a rural area where the houses are a distance apart. I had a dog up until last Dec. so that is probably what kept them away even though he was a small dog and only barked rarely.

The white patches were probably where the breasts were. And, by the way, the bear now wants to be known as Chas. (Chaz). When the testosterone shots kick in I'm sure he will be more aggressive.
I had heard one does not leave a BBQ out in remote/rural areas; its an open invitation.
Will you be getting a gun? A "BB" gun or some such?

We have had a 250lb. black bear roaming our neighborhoods for the past 2 weeks. Same thing going after the birdfeeders. We were talking about this last week at the gym and one of the guys said he was sitting reading in his family room on the second floor with a deck out back and a birdfeeder. The bear just climbed up the support beams like it was a tree and there he was on the second floor. Scared the heck out of him. Haven't taken mine down yet but the dogs are no longer going out in the woods. Too many foxes fisher cats bears and who knows what else is living back there.

Coyotes can be a problem for people living on the outskirts bordering on park or undeveloped lands here. Domestic house cats are most at risk, but perhaps small dogs as well. And one shouldn't leave one's baby out in the back yard unattended in coyote country.
My BBQ was on the deck and we had just used it a couple hours earlier so I was really surprised that the bear did not go after it. We have several guns in the house as my ex is a hunter.

The blaze on his chest is clearly visible. The mark on his head just appears to be a hairless area, perhaps due to a scar from a scuffle with another bear.
Me, I probably would have banged some pots out the back door, maybe thrown some rocks at him. As long as I had a large caliber weapon nearby just in case. And such action works better if you have a group of people - bears might attack a lone person but would thing twice about attacking a group of people - and I've witnessed them backing off when they realize there's more than one person involved (just hearing multiple voices from different directions will do it).

I felt pretty safe in the house although I did close all the windows. And I do have bear spray now just in case. I cut the lawn when I got home after work today and the entire time I was watching the woods all around me.

Very good video clips-the bear looks like the common black bears we have in Eastern NC.I have encoutered them while going to and leaving work.Twice I have had to stop and let them pass-and stay in the car!There is a black bear hunting season out here for both firearms and archery.and I have heard bear "bauls" while doing security checks out here at work on my mid shift-make sure all coumpound gates are closed!Bears are much like people they will eat the same things and like people-will "dumpster dive" to get food scraps.also there are feral hogs out in this area-they can be just as dangerous and as big as the bears.The hogs are better eating than the bears-for both the meat MUST be cooked well done to avoid trichcanosis and other perasites they can carry.
Several years ago the Ontario government eliminated the annual bear hunt. Since then the bear population has grown tremendously and it seems like there are a lot more bear attacks.

VERNON -- Police say it was an "attack." At this point, New Jersey wildlife officials say, it was an "incident."
Either way, Henry Rouwendal, who was nursing a head injury, dislocated shoulder and other injuries at his Vernon home last night, says his run-in with a hungry black bear was "a pretty wild ordeal."
"I'm still hurting pretty badly. My face is all messed up. It looks like I've been in a boxing match," said the 52-year-old electrical engineer. "I'm just lucky to be talking to you now."
Rouwendal said he was in his driveway at about 10:30 last Friday night, loading the back of his sport utility vehicle for a business trip to New Hampshire.
Along with his bags was an Italian hoagie, loaded with salami and other meats, lettuce, onions and tomatoes.
Suddenly, Rouwendal said, something hit him from behind.
"It blind-sided me. I was on the ground and I was thinking, 'What the hell just hit me?'" said Rouwendal, who also suffered a large cut on his left temple and several deep bruises on his knee, elbow and buttocks.
Rouwendal said he was knocked, face-first to the ground. When he rolled over, the bear was standing over him and then grabbed the sandwich.
"I kicked him three times in the snout and one time in the throat. I think the one in the throat got him," Rouwendal said, adding the bear started to run toward the rear of his home on Panorama Drive in the Lake Panorama section of Vernon.

A guy I fly with on occasion has a beach house in Panama City, Fl and has problems with black bears. These things will come up the stairs and lounge on the deck. Local code requires that everyone has bear proof trash cans. Actually they aren't bear proof, but bear resistant. A determined bear can still get into them.
One of the bears broke into a neighbors car and trashed it a couple of months ago. It broke out the windshield and climbed inside. The car was totaled. They have seen one of them in their yard a few times while they were outside. Fortunately the bears run off as soon as they see people.
To tell you the truth, I never even thought that bears were in Florida.
