Beard Trimmer

My Remington VPG6530 trimmer/razor is gone bad after 5 years.  Apparently a bad battery pack, it runs for approx 15 seconds at slightly reduced power then goes dead until turned off for a few mins, repeat.  No exposed fasteners for disassembly so would have to be pried apart (potential destruction) to investigate possibility of replacing the pack.

What recommendations for a new unit?

I have a Braun BT3040 that I like very much.  It holds a charge pretty good. I have an extremely coarse bread and the blades on the Braun handle it well. I even cut my hair with it on occasion instead of dragging out the Wahl Cordless hair clippers.

<span style="font-family: helvetica;">I also have a Wahl a couple of years now.  Mine is rechargeable, came with a number of guards and options, and is waterproof.  The waterproof part I like the best not because I trim my beard in the shower (seems would be odd) but because when I'm finished I can run the whole things parts and all under a running faucet which I think is much more hygienic than brushing them clean.  I use it 2 or 3 times a week and I bet I go a month without charging it if not longer.</span>

I can’t remember what brand my previous trimmer is (the name wore off), but it worked well until corrosion buildup on one of the battery terminals and I’d have to futz with the batteries every time to make it work.

I was looking at both Wahl and Braun, but chose the Braun BT 5050 trimmer. Rechargeable, holds a charge for what seems like months (I use it once a week), is easily adjustable and is comfortable to hold.

I had a Wahl before the Braun and I returned it because it couldn’t handle my coarse bread hair.  I bogged down and pulled the hair and was painful.  I guess if you don’t have a coarse beard a Wahl would be OK.  And the one I bought wasn’t one of the cheaper ones either.  I also didn’t like the guards on the Wahl, the Braun’s are adjustable and you don’t have to keep taking them off and changing them when you want a different length.  Plus the numbers were hard to read unless I put my glasses on, the Braun’s numbers are easy to read.

 

Now for hair clippers I prefer the Wahl.

We have a Philips MG3750. It charges quickly and holds a charge for a long time. It came with a number of attachments .

I gave one of Dave's trimmer sets that was still complete to my super hairy FWB, and he loves it.  He's very particular, so I'll double check next time I'm at his place to see what brand it is.  I just sheared the back of his neck down to below his collar line last night and it did a great job.

I have Panasonic ER224S wet/dry. I bought it because I wanted a model that was battery operated and had one guard that stayed on and didn't need to be changed.

I like it for everything except edging my moustache. However, It's still new enough that the moustache problem might be user error ;-)

Stays charged for weeks and is very easy to clean. It vacuums up the clippings and holds them in an easy-to-empty compartment. There's no mess. It really works. About $60 on the Phillips/Norelco website. I paid about $50 on Amazon years ago...now they want $300

Easy to hold, waterproof and comes with several combs for different lengths. Perfect for old men like me who no longer have much hair to cut. About $60 on Amazon.</span>

It could depend on your beard length.

 

For many years I used a Wahl plug-in trimmer. It's actually quite good, never drains its batteries, and has a number of useful attachments. But: it doesn't have a nose hair attachment. Bummer.

 

A couple years ago I also got a Philips/Norelco - different from the one pictured in this thread - and it does quite well on shorter beards. Plus the nose hair trimmer, works great. Well, as good as any nose hair trimmer. It's also water proof.

 

Over a year ago I started growing out my beard to the point where neither the Wahl or Norelco could handle it. I actually trimmed my long beard at one point with a Flowbee. Actually worked fairly well, although stiffer beard hairs and the Flowbee don't get along all that well.

 

About a month ago I got tired of the beard dipping into the soup and trimmed it back with the Wahl. Left the mustache long, though. Found a good mustache wax.

 

Might have to go back to the Flowbee.

My first trimmer was a Wahl in 2012, a lower-end model $19.86 from WM.  Went bad after 3 years.  The current Remington was next, has a vacuum feature.

I need something with a foil shaver attachment for the cheeks & neck, fixed or adjustable guards, and a small detail trimmer for the upper lip/mustache line.

No body shaving.

I think I forgot to mention one of my beard trimmers: It was probably a Wahl, the battery kind with a little extendable comb with lengths you could sort of dial in. It kind of sucked. I probably stashed it at the bottom of a drawer somewhere, too lazy to go look for it. I might even have tossed it away at some point. Let's just say I would not recommend it.

The corded Wahl which was my mainstay for many years still works like it's brand new. I attached an extension cord to it so I can use in the shower (water off, of course). The trimmings pretty much just stay in there and then it's a simply matter of putting it out of the shower and hosing everything down the drain. More or less. The stuff that gets caught in the drain screen of course gets picked up.
