belt drive kenmore problems again

Hey guys, I have a bent plunger on my wig wag and it doesn't push the cam bar out of spin all the way when the machine kicks out of spin. what is the easiest way to change this part out? I would appreciate any help. Hey Gordon, I know you know the answer to this.

BENT SPIN CAM BAR PLUNGER

When this happens you normally need to replace the control magnet assembly { wig - wag, I never liked that name it sounds childish ] as the frame around the control magnets is usually loose or broken and even if it appears OK the bushing that the plunger moves up and down in is worn. When this happens the plunger will cock as it tries to engage the cam bar and may bend again. The plunger on the cam bar also needs replacement, be sure to use the correct pin as its a hardened pin a regular cotter pin often won't last long.

I did this repair on an '85 WP washer....

A co-worker had an '85 WP washer that I believe, tried agitate and spin at the same time which caused everything to bind up (the motor burned through the belt).

All I did was buy a new set of plungers and replace the broken one. Nothing appeared to be wrong with the control magnets so I left them alone. BTW, it's kind of a bugger to replace because you have to cut off the pin that goes through the cam bar (there's not a lot of room in there), but it is doable!

The washer has been working fine for over a year now with no other problems.

Just as John said, you have to replace the control magnet, the plunger, and the rivet/pin. You should also lubricate the track / pathway that the spin cam bar rides in while you're in there.

There are two ways to buy a control magnet - bare, or with plungers and rivets. Get the later, the part number is 89814.

To install, first you need to remove the old control magnet. Just remove the center screw and shimmy it off - you'll need to twist back and fourth while pulling up.

Then, cut the pin on the bent plunger. This will allow you to take the plunger off.

Take the new plunger from the kit, set it over the existing cam bar, and install the rivet and tinnerman through it and through the cam bar at the same time.

Position the new control magnet over the two plungers. You might want to clean the right side plunger to remove carbon, etc. Slide the magnet onto the shaft while keeping the plungers engaged inside the magnet. Then tighten the magnet and re-connect the wires.

If you get the wires confused, red goes on the left, yellow on the right. It doesn't matter where you put the white ones. Be sure to feed them properly through the hole in the magnet and use that black plastic collar they supply.

Sounds easy enough?

Well I have already recently replaced the solienoid wig wag a few weeks ago when the machine stoped spinning. does it realy need replacing again? I figured just the plunger need replacing.

No need to replace the control magnet again if it's only a few weeks old unless the bending plunger damaged it. The lubricant that seems to work well on the cam bars is White Lithium.

I don't know the part numbers right off for the plunger or a plunger kit. Do you need it? I can get it from my catalog if you need it.

You may already be aware, but I find SearsPartsDirect.com to be a real resource. I'm guessing that your model number is 110.82372110 (or 82372100). Sears has that and most other belt-drive models scanned and online (scans are of original parts lists) for you to browse. I use that to get a starting basis with part numbers that I can search for on ebay, at my parts house, etc.

Often even if the part is NLA online, or simply cannot be found that way, give them a call and have warehouses checked. Found some parts for my Whirlpool portable/convertible that way.
