Bendix Auto Drier De Luxe

Hey guys, been a while since Ive posted on here but just thought I'd share the happiness with this beauty of a dryer! As many of you may know Ive been on the hunt for a full size dryer for a while now, only having a compact White Knight dryer just wasnt enough, It would either be on all day as sometimes one load from the washer would be 3 for a dryer that small, not just this but it was far from the fastest dryer!

So on Ebay last week just having a random search I saw the Bendix, and thought I just HAD to have this, Ive always been very much into Bendix washers and dryers, my first washer was a Bendix HomeLaundryCentre 800 Washer Dryer that I loved and was gutted to see it go ( missed it ever since!)

Back to the dryer now, for its age I think its in very good condition I must say, it dosnt look like its been used much which is nice. I gave it a go earlier this afteroon with a decent sized load which it dried in around 40-45 minutes which is fast in itself, but to me seems amazing - I'm used to waiting sometimes 80 minutes for a small load from the White Knight lol!

A real nice vintage dryer and I have a real soft spot for square door bendix's.

When I was 3 or 4 years old and at Play School (pre-primary), my best friend at the time (till the family moved away and we lost touch) lived in a pub called 'The Punchbowl'.

The pub kitchen was home to a Hoover A3040 Automatic De Luxe (currys exclusive 3236H), but their living quarters kitchen held a stacked set of all silver facia (I think they were the earlier versions) square door Bendix's.

Being a nipper, they towered above me and looked superb totally dominating the kitchen.

Have fun with the dryer - now you just need to find a 7142 or 7147 to match!

My uncle had the Philco version of the dryer. Remember it was really quiet! Always liked the fact that the timer ticked away like a kitchen timer. Along with the mid 80s philips washing machine and AEG DishwasherI loved going there!

Paul..... Ahhh, Memories of things like you mentioned are just great, I can just imagine how amazing a matching set of these Bendix machines would look!

Whilst this isn't the matching dryer to the early 80's Bendix WasherDryer I used to have, it stil brings back so many fond memories of it, even just buy the look and feel, and of course the Bendix logo on the front panel! Cheers for posting! ( My first vintage appliance, and im so amazed!)

David...... Sounds like a really nice kitchen set up your Uncle used to have with the dryer and dishwasher. I know exactly what you mean about the timer on the dryer, it really does have a nice ticking sound to it!, the dryer itself Ive found to be so quiet the ticking of the timer actually sticks out! Such a vintage sound I think, Will upload a video of the dryer soon.

Your new/old Bendix looks in fab condition. Prob because most people never used em cos most people thought they cost a fortune to run lol. My mum would never use her dryer, "it will eat the electric" she would say

Looks like your machine will be good for at least another 20+ years. better than the sh*&e they make now.

Robbie - Yeah I agree for its age it is in very good condition, sounds really smooth when its on too , really solid. Yeah its funny how some people think dryers cost loads to run, even though they are fairly juicy appliances when theyre used right it can work out quite efficient, esspecially with me as now im not having to seperate loads for the dryer in 2 or sometimes 3 like I did with the white knight, each taking anything up to 80 minutes, so using this dryer works out cheaper on the whole

I do have one question about the dryer though which is about the filter. Am I mistaken or does the plastic disc at the back of the drum designed to come out, I can see a fair amount of fluff behind it and a mesh type filter which the fluff is collecting on, I did try to get it off but it dosnt seem to want to move, and I didnt want to force it in the slightest....maybe theres a certain way of doing it.

Hope one of you guys on here may know

Yup the plastic disc does come off and behind it is the filter. almost certain it turns the opposite way the drum turns like on the older hoover and the hotpoints mate. Would do it sooner than later as the more it builds up the less air is going to pass thru and will take longer to dry. (obvs i know lol)

Thanks for your help dude, I'm glad it is actually a filter behind there and that I wasnt just letting my immagination run wild with itself haha! I did hoover it out through the holes earlier but couldnt suck everything out of it.

Ive just tried what you suggested, turning it the opposite way the drum turns, and it wont budge! Im starting to think its been a very long time since its been cleaned so maybe its a bit wedged?. I have to say though it is running well with its filter like that, not that I wouldnt just leave it, but I can just imagine how well its going to be once the filters clear!!

Any other suggeststions guys, they are much appreciated
