Gary wrote me that his folks had one when he was a wee lad.

Yes, that does bring back memories. The only thing that was different was the energy disc wasn't round like that. Someone must have remodeled one for that machine. I remember the disc having 3 grey rubber blades that sat on an angle on top of a spinning large black ball. There was at times problems when the spin cycle started and was off balance. The belt underneath would fly off due to the main pulley wobbling during the spinning.

What was the 'power surge' feature, really?

I am pretty sure they called it that due to the way the disc would move the water in the tub during wash cycle.
