Well went and collected this heavy beast today from a another site i visit, my partner spotted it there and told me about it at home.

Got there loaded it onto my trusty sack truck and one of the wheels collapsed under the weight!......site staff helped me load it

Got home and had to carry from car to house about 40 yards, we gave up at the front door and there it sits under a bike cover waiting to be collected ;-)

As you can see it might need the odd lick of paint etc :-)........but what a beautiful machine, the drum still turns as does the motor (by hand), but that is far as i have ventured with it

so Mike thanks for making me orange i in return i give you this ummm slightly in need of restoration Bendix :-)

well worth saving

but seeing the overall state I'm happy to let someone else tackle the body work, I would be happy to help with the mechanics though. This will hopefully spur me onto working on the previous model washer, I have started and need to complete. I don't think anyone has this model restored in the uk thought, Mike do you fancy risking flooding your basement lol. Well done for rescueing this Gary, and for lugging it about, possibly lighter than the Lt model, being a bolt down machine lol thats no consolation to your back though.

Thanks for all you've done for me,I took the hoovermatic drain valve into work this afternoon and did an epoxy repair on the casting and glued the new seal in so will try it out over the weekend.

the one I'm working on

having rewired the motor, and in thoery had the machine running, the next thing is the drum itself, it's so scaled up, the drain is blocked and ordinary household descalers aren't touching it. The coin trap has been epoxyed up in the past, so I'm reluctant to break that seal, I was thinking the next step would be to take the drum out and brush off as much scale as possible and chemically attack the rest. Any way just wanted to add the picture to the thread.

the washer

This is the washer of that vintage, it's owned by a theatrical prop hire company, and no they won't let me buy it, though haven't asked rescently. lol

WOW

Mat you sly buggah! :-) i didnt know you had a bendix washer!!! LOL..........brilliant.

my mum used to use vinegar on limescale when i was a kid in london, brushing as much off as you can certainly helps. or maybe just good old chemical warfare :-)

I am glad for you to be able to enjoy the 3174, and i hope the epoxy does its stuff

Gary

Bloody hell!!!!!

Slightly knackered or what!

That will be a learning curve in restoration.

Cant wait to see the end results - no pressure. lol.

You kept the piccy of the theatre bendix quiet Mathew. I notice what you mean about the dent, although a bit of panel beating will work wonders i am sure.
You will have to start hassling them about it again, or at least put your name on it should it come up for disposal (if you havent done so already)!

cheers
paul

We all....

....know my thoughts on white vinegar...

When we were in Germany I brought a small bottle of white vinegar back to the UK with me. It was the strongest smelling vinegar I had ever had a whiff of...clear the sinuses in one go.

Nothing cleaned our kettle in London faster that it did. 2 tablespoons in the bottom and 2/3 fill with cold water. brought to the boil and scale was gone...

BUT....that was a modern plastic kettle and I can't help but wonder what it may do to the enamel in your washers drum

Boltdown model

Hello Jon I think it is a bolt down model, there are no wheels just long threaded shafts with large nuts on them, the tub is rigid so the only seal is on the door
Though others on this group will know more about this machine than me

I know it is a state and will be a complete restoration job but i still see a beautiful machine there

I only hope that Mike approves and i have not got him a pile of shite ;-)

Gary

Bolt down......

Hey Guys

That is indeed a bolt down machine- the last if im not mistaken??

Seamus

Gary - I presume it had been sat outside for a fair while to get that rusty??

Seamus

Hello Seamus

Thanks for that information
Yeah brought by the local council who are clearing a disused house.........there was another machine came in with it but that was even worse (indesit L5)

Ah well
:-)

curious

excuse my ignorance but what is the difference between and Duomatic and the Triomatic? I have looked at the pics of both and they both seem to be washer/dryers to me. Why is the Duomatic so much bigger? Did it have a much larger capacity or was it made for the US market?

Bendix Triomatic

Nice one Gary, Early 60`s bendix Triomatic, washer with heater and tumble dryer as well!!!, never seen the inside of one of these so it will be a great reference point...it is the last of the boltdowns, has a double inner & outer vitreous enamel tub and spins about 500rpm...hot & cold fill, this model is a timed automatic with dryer..heres what she looks like tarted up!!

Bendix Semi-Automatic

The only other small cabinet Bendix in use fully restored is Darren`s in Lincoln, he took a BendixMPh semi automatic and completely restored it, had a new bearing unit machined at a local workshop, and completely restored it, it is fully installed in his retro kitchen with two Bendix taps above it, its great because you can control the length of washtime and rinsing & spinning etc...
