I came across this vintage advertisement and noticed it said the Westinghouse machine uses 10 gallons less water. As a Mojave desert dweller, It got me thinking. Were any of the classic era machines also designed with water efficiency in mind but still did a great job washing clothes thoroughly? I'm all for acquiring a machine that is less thirsty.

Thanks.

You could either go with a front loader or get a machine with the sudsaver feature and reuse the wash water or you could use two toploaders and drain the wash water from one into the other. Two is better than one and as a member of AW.org, any excuse to have a second machine is valid. Do you have solar hot water heating? Have you ever had the sublime experience of using a solid tub Frigidaire washer? They were water thrifty and did a great job.

All of Tom’s suggestions are great.

But for me if I could find a vintage early to mid 50’s Westinghouse FL in good condition that would be my choice, as this was the first automatic washing machine that really caught my attention in a big way at the age of 5. My favorite aunt had a ‘55 Westinghouse FL that fascinated me. Plus I love their simplicity. And compared to the top loaders of that era they were thrifty in their use of water too.
