Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Both Vintage and New TL

Vintage: The pre-electronic DD Whirlpool made washers were the best.

The switch to electronics left them poorly made trash.

Current: There are not good ones. The GE made compact 24" are wash OK, the Electrolux are great at washing and breaking down. No experience with the current Whirlpools, so can't say.

If reliability counts, go vintage. If you must go new, then a European FL?

Avanti/MagicChef/Midea/RCA/Haier are all just about the same machine, just some programming or option differences....

very durable units, all hoses needed have been included for both sink or permanent hookup...they fit just about anywhere, spin speeds up to 900 rpms....

they are built in a number of sizes...1.0, 1.7, 2.5, and 3.0....all are portable on wheels, except the 3.0 which is permanent install only...

stick with a 1.7 or larger....which is equal to a GE V12's capacity.....this size will wash a queen size sheet set with ease....

I have an Avanti and MagicChef 1.7's....the Avanti has more options and flexibility with cycles, can run with full water levels, or HE mode, and the wash speed is controlled by water level and cycle.....

most of these units have a detergent and softener dispenser, waterfalls and lint filters....

the MagicChef offers an "AirDry" cycle, which will spin the load for up to 99 minutes, clothes are barely damp when complete....

matching dryers are equally durable, opt for the larger capacity...floor, stand or wall mountable

I added those labels, as everyone was asking what those slots were for....

many people don't realize that the fabric softener dispenser is built into the balance ring....when you think of it, a few of the full size HE TLer's come with a
$2.00 Downy Ball, and the machine cost upwards of $700.00...

I have demonstrated the advantages of this machine, capacity, and flexibility.....you will be amazed at what it can handle and do!...small and light enough to fit in the back seat of most any car....I brought it to events for show and tell....several members have bought and raved about them...

as I said, mine are the 1.7 cu ft units, which is equal to a General Electric V12 washers capacity....

this is a 'must have' if you only have one vintage daily driver.....a quick hookup in an emergency, and yet small enough to tuck out of sight....

you can't program a full size machine like you can on this one.....Reg or HE mode, you can add up to two spin sprays and/or deep rinses to any cycle....you can agitate and then pause and wait for you, or Soak, Wash, and continue into the rest of the cycle....the combinations are endless.....

wash action can be adjusted from vigorous to gentle.....lower water levels will adjust the agitation as not to destroy clothing...

the highest spin speed on these two is 850rpm....

there is a water fall half way up the tub, and two at the top, clothing is saturated from all levels....the lint filter is a nice addition...[this post was last edited: 4/15/2017-13:53]

heres my MagicChef unit.......

note:

the larger base washplate....

the lint filter built into the side....

same 1.7 as the Avanti, but this one has a shorter wider tub....

two lid switches you have to by-pass....

this unit has a built in automatic drain valve, useful for draining into a tub or shower, as the hose can lie on the floor, a two part unit that unlocks the tub and open the valve....

you really have to see these units in action......

I'm one of the people who've used Yogi's machines and I can tell you they are every bit as good as he claims. I recall a couple of times guys put in what they thought was a full load, were amazed at the wash action, then added articles one by one to see how much they could put in and still get decent turnover.

I wouldn't be surprised if this series has the highest ratio of pounds of laundry to volume of machine of any on the market.

Despite its appearance, the washplate does NOT function like the washplate of an HE TL does... Not at all. A better analogy would be the impellers of a twin-tub.

The lint filter is very effective.

There're several YouTube vids of this series in action.

and a little old school...well, actually from 1990.....I just picked up this set for FREE off CL.....very clean, needed minimal clean up.....all books, legs and wheels included, and the faucet adapter....it is a direct drive washer...

if these little guys can do it, I see no reason the bigger machines can't have the fabric softener dispenser built into the balance ring....

in any case.....if your in the market for one of these.....check out CL, and enter 'portable washer'......

stick with 1.7 or larger size, and pay no more than $100.00......I got mine for 50.00 each...

F&P

I think F&P only offer full-size 27" machines in the US, no 24"/21" models which would be considred compact.

But yeah, F&P are the pioneers in terms of HE washing and pretty much offered a non-HE option since day one. So they know what they are doing for sure!
