Hi.
I know this is rather subjective and depends on many factors, but I am doing my usual (annual? hehe) reassessment of detergents!
This time, I am focussing on dishwasher detergents.
Also, I know what I am asking will largely apply to the UK and the Republic of Ireland only, as well as the rest of the EU where product are available with the same formulation across the Union, but anyone can of course comment.
We tend to use the following:
1. Finish Classic tablets
2. Fairy Active Bursts (very expensive when not reduced in price!)
3. Tesco 5-in-1 Original tablets* (Henkel)
4. Sainsbury’s Perform + Protect tablets* (Henkel)
5. Ecover (don’t hurt me! hehe
) tablets
* Both are said to be made by Henkel.
All do a pretty good job, although Finish have been independently tested by Which? (formerly the Consumers Association), an independent consumer group that publishes an monthly magazine of the same name. They recently tested Finish Classic tablets and believed them to be the most effective.
My question does not simply centre on how effectiveness the product is – I am also interested in other factors, like this:
* How well do the tablets dissolve? (I know this depends on the temperature, but 50 degrees C is a minimum, which of course the machine is always run at that or above.)
* How well do the tablets rinse?
* How much foam is produced?
* How strong is the perfume? (The Tesco and Sainsbury’s ones listed above do not have any perfume in them, although the Lemon variety does. Also, some detergents use limonene, which is technically a natural perfume, after some chemistry wizardry, taken from fruit.)
* Have you noticed any nasty smells , technical problems, marks or damage causes by a particular tablet?
* Finally, which make and model of dishwasher do you use each tablet with, and when did you buy that model?
I would normally settle for an all-Finish range – Classic tablets, rinse aid and salt – but we seem to be having problems with them lately. As an example – and I don’t think this was a bad batch, although there could have been a reaction of some kind with our dishwasher – but there was an awful acidic smell released into the room when using Finish Classic tablets. :-( Now, I know it could be our somewhat lacking Hotpoint (Indesit) dishwasher, but it’s perfectly clean and working reasonably well. However, as some of you know, it’s due to be replaced with an AEG-Electrolux F54750 slimline dishwasher any day now.
(We couldn’t go for a Miele this time because we may be moving and so will then leave this AEG here and get a full-size Miele later.
Miele slimline dishwashers are, unfortunately, rather expensive. :-()
I know some detergents, like Tesco Naturally ones, produce rather a lot of suds, which is not wanted in a dishwasher of course.
I know you guys will probably say that any of those I’ve listed above are pretty much fine, although I know a couple of them may be ‘controversial’ choices! hehe ;-)
Many thanks for your help, and take care.
Regards,
Carl
