What's the best powdered soap for a KDS-14?

For my vintage dishwashers any Cascade powder does the best job.
This is likely in part to the hard water in Grand Rapids, MI. I have Maytag and KitchenAid dishwashers mfg. from 1975 to 1992. I don't pre-rinse. I fill up both sides of the detergent dispensers. If you have soft water you may have a different experience.

Store brand is fine, Truthfully the old Kitchen Aids , if water is hot enough,will clean the dishes with water alone, they are that good!

Finish Gel Gets My Vote
Was gifted a bottle (damaged) by manager of local supermarket. Tried it last night in the GE Mobile Maid and was that well please with results.
Aside from the gagging whiff of chlorine stuff worked a treat.

Powder for sure. I've put my KA in storage for now and bought a new machine, but I've been using a mixture I made of the generic Target brand powder mixed with LemiShine. It formed a solid brick after mixing it lol. But I was able to break it up and it works great. I'm using it now too in my new Kenmore Elite dishwasher.

Something with phosphate in it. But Massachusetts is one of those states that gets all worked up about phosphate I think, so you may not be able to buy it. Usually where there's a will there's a way. Try Amazon and see if they'll ship Bubble Bandit to Massachusetts. There's all so Cascade Fryer Boil out don't know about the amounts of boil out to use though. Haven't tried it. Still using old stock Cascade here. Last results would be to have a friend in a phosphate state buy it and ship it to you or use LimiShine.

Many parts of Massachusetts have very soft water so not only are phosphates unnecessary they will destroy your vintage DW.
Our good friend Jon C in the Boston area literally stripped the porcelain finish off the tank and door liner of his beautiful vintage KDS-14 DW over a period of years.
You should use whatever DW detergents work for you, and unless your waste water drains into a septic system phosphates should be avoided for environmental reasons, there are better ways to get great DW results.
Phosphates are banned nationwide in home DW detergents for good reason.

Just to clarify one thing; there is no nationwide ban on phosphates in dishwasher or laundry detergents, just an agreement by the big manufacturers not to use them. This is why Bubble Bandit can legally sell phosphated detergents. Some states do have bans, and they don’t ship to those places.
To find out your water hardness, call your local water utility. It might take awhile to get to someone who can answer the question — the receptionist won’t know. I eventually got to someone at the pumping plant who was happy to talk to me. He probably didn’t have much to do!
