Have an old Betty Crocker cookbook (with a red cover) that think is from the 1940's. It was given to me by the husband of a neighbor who passed on several years ago. Given her age at the time it is likely she was a young woman in 1940's and thus setting up her own housekeeping.
On another note, sad thing about that video is most of those girls/women likely had college degrees (Home Economics probably) and were paid very small sums, but suppose work and or career for females then was where you found it. Considering the other options open (teaching, nursing or the convent) baking cakes/cooking doesn't seem a bad way to go. *LOL*

I've seen this video a number of times over the past year. One of my favorites, actually. Too bad the sound is so muffled---can't hear an 's' or 't'---but love the woman doing the demonstration. The history lesson at the beginning is cool, as well.
Oddly, haven't actually tried to make a cake using the 'new' 4-minute recipe. Will have to do that sometime.

What a neat old film! I recognize the names of several of the cakes as recipes included in the Dormeyer mixer cookbooks from the late 40s.
After seeing this, I have the urge to dust off the 3B Mixmaster and make that silver white cake (with the frosting and chocolate drizzle, bien sûr).

Interesting how Sunbeam and Hamilton Beach in trying to please their stockholders cheapened their products over the years that KitchenAid has become the most prized stand mixer in their kitchens. Their design has not changed and they service what they sell. Granted there are a few lemons that have gotten by inspection and have made mistakes like their Accolaide series. they have not sacrificed quality for profit with their mixers. Some of their other small appliance , made in China I would not buy. Their large appliances are too feature laden and have too many parts lacking longevity especially in the top of their lines.
Back in the day, one would have only seen the film if you were female seated in a Home Economics I class, times have sure change! Rural schools could not have afforded the projector to show the film.
The one bowl or quick-mix method sure saved time in the kitchen in making a delicious cake. Betty Crocker showed how make many of the cakes for a time using both the creaming and the one-bowl methods in one edition of their cookbooks. The promotion also boosted the sale of mixers too!

When my mother graduated from the University of Minnesota during WWII, she said that Pillsbury and General Mills offered very low starting salaries, confirming what Launderess said. She found better paying work managing in a defense plant kitchen outside of Minneapolis, working as a dietician in a hospital in Riverside, CA and, after daddy went overseas, teaching back in Hibbing, MN. All work with food is hard work for generally little money.
One of my mother's cousins was married to a baker. When making batter for a lot of cakes they didn't fuss. Just put all the ingredients in a big Hobart mixer and then mix for ten minutes. Done!
