Food for thought!

Start NOW!!!....2 years ago I was put out on disability, not by choice, and money can get tight, been there, done that......I learned a new PERSPECTIVE, clip coupons, buy generic, prepare more home cooked meals and freeze, hang clothes on the line, save where you can.....

Even when times get better for you, keep on doing this and see how far your dollar could have been going, I know I have changed my ways, a great lesson, what was I thinking before?...but I am better for it now....times may seem hard and rough now, but a new door has opened, walk thru with a fresh new idea, a few changes will make you a better person, inside and out, were here for you if you need to talk, or need your laundry done....lol.....keep in touch

I did the same thing

I quit my job in May 2009. The company I worked for was literally killing me. It was the best decision my wife and I made. Having very little debt helped a lot. My wife was not ready to quit work yet. This really freed up a lot of extra time I can spend helping my edlerly parents two days a week. The other three days is the norm...cleaning, laundry (my favorite) and keeping the yard up.

So far it's been great!

My friends all told me I would go crazy not working. Think again! I love it!

Good for you

Sometimes you just have to be true to yourself. All my best in all the great things that are comming your way. That is how I see it. Michael

Congratulations and good luck!

It's not easy to leave a job behind you, even when you're unhappy in it. I was lucky, I was able to change to a job that I like much better than my previous one. Hope there is something in the future for you that makes you happy and brings you money.

Take care!

Louis

Congratulations Paul...

...It is a big step to take and I, like others did it in the recent past.

2 1/2 years ago I quit my job at the local Credit Union (think savings and loan). I had worked in banking and finance since 1988, but this particular company was virtually killing me. Picked a job up the day I finished working with a friend who is a solicitor doing some conveyancing....the less we say about that the better, but it allowed me to look for work.

Roll forward a couple of years to now and I'm working for the Australian Government department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations....on the education side. More specifically in adult literacy. Not teaching, but rather policy and programme formation to help those with literacy issues either get into the workforce, keep their job by improving their literacy or obtain promotions by improving their literacy. The interesting thing for me is that I fell into banking by accident and had always wanted to be a teacher. I may not be a teacher, but the work I do impacts people through education....

....so in some ways, I have achieved my goal.

It seems that you have thought deeply about what you want to do and are going for it. Best of luck and know that you can always bounce things off people here...

Chris

Hey Paul

I need a Lunch Cook until the Restaurant Closes !!!
Good Luck to you and don't worry about anything. It's horrible to be at a job that you dislike. "It will all come out in the wash". Stay in touch, Eddie. Waiting to here from the guy in Salem

What is this thing with companies killing their employees? I have heard this from a lot of people myself.

They usually describe it as having to do the work of two people, they break their asses getting the task it done on time only to be told later "Well, you did OK on that, but we feel you COULD HAVE DONE MORE!".

I think this attitude that a lot of companies have adopted come from the Reaganomics era. Cut costs to the bone so you can make more profit, if the employees don't like being overworked to death tell them to leave and hire cheaper employees.

Imagine what employees would do if they were told that they were valued by their companies. That wouldn't cost anything.

Killing us softly...

I was in a similar position in late 1999... got a blood clot in my entire left leg from a long commute, sedentary job, and too much plane travel. It's the kind of thing that could break off and travel to lungs and kill one. Took 3 weeks to heal and after that I made some lifestyle changes that helped a lot but I also started planning for a career change. When I was finally laid off for the last time from a desk job, I went back to school and got a 2 year certificate (in one year) as a machinist - which involves a lot of standing but which is actually much better for leg blood circulation.

I don't make nearly as much $$$ as I was making in IT, but I think I'm much happier and healthier all around, at least relatively speaking.

Bottom line: going back to school and doing what you WANT to do can be, in the long run, much better for one than sticking with a job you hate and that you feel is killing you. And being in one's 40's or later isn't too late... as they say, one is never too old to learn.
