Lavender Magazine, the Minneapolis-St. Paul weekly gay news magazine this week had a story on Corporate Equality. Whirlpool scored 100%, other appliance makers didn't do as well.

I thought some of us might find this very interesting, OK I guess Direct Drive Whirlpool washers just went up a notch for me and I'm going right downstairs to kiss my Pink '57 Lady Kenmore Set...

I've heard before that Whirlpool was good in that respect. I'm still not happy with them trying to take over the world, but at least their corporate heads are in the right place.

Give that '57 a smooch from me, as well, Robert.

OK, as far as Estee Lauder goes, I would have to give their high score a big "Well Duh", in the "only women and gay men would work there" department. I am certainly not surprised about the low scores of Wal Mart as they don't know the concept of equality. I am somewhat surprised about Costco scoring low as I have met quite a few lesbians working at Costco. I'm definately not surprised about Starbuck's scoring high from personal experiences. I've had many male Baristas try to pick up on me at Starbuck's. I let them down as gently as possible. Most of them are really cool about it. I can certainly sympathize with them though, it seems like it's difficult enough to find love as a straight person. I can't even imagine what the gay population must go through. Although I do have to admire their spirit.

Interesting that Whirlpool scored so high and Maytag scored so low. Looks like Maytag execs are about to get a real re-education when it comes to corporate equality, as Whirlpool takes over their operations and sets the standards going forward.

Whirlpool scores high on other matters, as well. For example, they won a prestigious refrigeration energy efficiency contest in the '80s, which netted them a sizable government grant, as well as putting them in the forefront of energy efficient refrigeration. If you compare Energy Guide stickers in the fridge section of most appliance stores/departments, the Whirlpool/KA/Kenmore products generally are significantly more energy efficient than the competition.

Interesting Merger Fact

a freind of ours who is gay works for ExxonMobil, he is a former Exxon employee.
Previous to the merger, Mobil Oil had a very liberal domestic partner policy and Exxon had none. In fact, Exxon didn't even know that they had gays working for them the way they acted. When the merger came all the good ole' boys at Exxon (read phobes) were scared to death of this. So how did they handle it?

All the former Mobil employees got to keep the domestic partners package, while the former Exxon employees got nothing. The President of Exxon said, "It'll never happen here!"

Go figure...

Perhaps some of the variation within industry comes from the location of the company HQ.

For example, Chevron is headquatered in San Francisco. That alone should be enough, but California has strict laws prohibiting discrimination and harassment in the workplace (as well as at school and in housing) based on sexual orientation. It would be nice if the rest of the states would follow suit.
