Just came home from seeing the movie Religulous, it was amazing. Totally sold out theater and very lively crowd made it all the more fun. A must see for any atheist or agnostic out there like me.. <br

Religion is the one area of life in which people's prejudices and irrational beliefs are expected to be excused. I've always believed that it's ultimately devastating to our intellectual and emotional progress as humans. Personally, I believe the descent of humanity into chaos will ultimately be caused by believers, not agnostics/atheists <br
It never ceases to amaze me how otherwise thoughtful, rational humans become superstitious, nonsense-spewing kooks once they start discussing their religious beliefs. This is most noticeable in fundamentalists and evangelicals, I've found. One of my favorites: "There can be no morality without god!" Bullshit <br
And kids, never, EVER believe the lie that says "All religions are ultimately a path to the same god." Every religious person I've known believes their own beliefs are the correct ones. <br
I mean, look at Christianity, as an example: There are even different synods with different beliefs within Lutheranism, alone! I was assisting with a baccalaureate service at the local high school a few years back, which that year, was being organized by the Missouri synod Lutheran church. I was asked to arrange music for a brass group and play the piano for the program. <br
At any rate, from what I could gather, students from various churches would be selected to do readings during the program. To my utter astonishment, the Missouri synod pastor said "All the readings will be done by students from our church." When pressed for a reason, he basically said that the other churches weren't as valid in god's eyes, because their standards were too lax. I walked out <br
Does/did an entity exist whose intellect and/or powers far outstrip our own? I, personally, don't think so. As for those who do believe, I am hugely disappointed with the childish, superstitious way most humans have chosen to express their belief in/worship of said entity. If one exists. Which I highly doubt <br
My epitaph: Thank god for atheists <br

My favorite commentary on religion is in a movie called "Life of Brian". In one scene Brian, a misidentified savior, loses a sandal while fleeing from a group of would-be disciples. One of the men picks up Brian's sandal and declares, "Behold! The Holy Shoe!" <br
And in the next scene, we see the group standing there, all of them holding long poles with sandals tied on top <br
IMO this is the perfect analogy of what most religions really amount to. Otherwise intelligent people, worshipping ghosts and shoes. I mean it's not all bad (e.g. many of them do a lot of charity work), but it's to the point now where, when someone identifies himself or herself as "Christian", red flags immediately go up inside my head: I assume they're spiritually arrogant, judgmental hypocrites. And I've been right about these people far more often than I've been wrong <br
Meanwhile, the most authentically "Christian" people I've known in my almost-50 years consistently have been agnostics and atheists. This doesn't surprise me, because most Christians use Jesus as little more than a "Get Out Of Jail, Free" card. They use their belief in an afterlife to absolve themselves of responsibility for their current lives. Screw over your neighbor, then tell the priest about it in a little box and all is forgiven <br
This has been taken to ridiculous (and extraordinarily dangerous) extremes in recent years, with the rise of so-called evangelical or apocryphal Christianity. These people can't wait to start WWIII, because they believe their sky fairy is going to appear and save them, right before he casts everyone else into eternal hellfire. The end result of this madness is obscenely nasty, e.g. George W. Bush and Sarah Palin claiming the slaughter of 70,000+ Iraqi civilians is "a task from God".

AMEN!

To all of the above <br
So what if religious people do lots of charity work. Usually and especially in the third world their charity comes at a price. Charity, like pity, is such a demeaning and condescending term anyway. <br

Atheism is one of God's best jokes.

I made that up all by myself. <br
Actually I am atheist/agnostic myself, but I like the joke <br <br <br
I love that Rowan Atkinson skit, where he plays the Devil welcoming all the new arrivals to Hell on Judgement Day <br
"Hello, welcome to Hell, I am the Devil but you can call me Toby. You are going to be spending quite a long time here. An eternity, in fact. Welcome to you atheists, I bet you fel a right bunch of charlies, don't you? And to you Christians, I'm afraid the Jews were right. Welcome to you sodomites, backs to the wall please. Adulterers, my there are a lot of you! Rapists, murderers and bank managers, Welcome. And Americans, I'm afraid he had a disagreement with your founding fathers and damned you all for all eternity. Though he acknowledges some of you put in a lot of good work...&quot <br
That's about all of it I can remember <br

Maher fan here too.,...

My experience with the Royal Ambassadors, (Baptist, young mens group). Rode up with the Pastor in his Buick to an elderly couples home. THEY were definately of very limited means and the husband had been ill. Of course the reverend, obtained an $offering. IMHO, The reverend should of taken THEM an envelope of money. While i don't deny Jesus in any way. I have never forgotten this, 37 years later. My dads religion by his own design, was to speak of the "ole man up above", and offer sesonal garden items, or a pack or two of meat from his freezer, to those he liked and felt, they were in need. I now try to emulate dad's generosity, and compassion for other human beings.

Bill Maher is brilliant; but not compatible with two rude Vi

I saw Bill Maher on "The View" last week. He was wonderful and makes me, who hardly goes to movies anymore, want to go see it. <br
The two stupid women(not Whoopi or Joy) were both hostile towards him and ganged up on him. Sherry fat-and-stupid got hot under the collar because he pointed out that the story of Noah and the flood, while a colorful fable, was scientifically preposterous. She, being a dimwitted Jehovah's Witness(I've met intelligent ones), got her knickers in a twist and he was, essentially bum-rushed off of the show. <br
I don't understand why a woman as accomplished and intelligent as Barbara Walters insists on keeping two neanderthals like Sherry what's-her-name and the republican bleached-blond asshole on the show, but I guess it creates enough controversy to attract viewers from the red states. Admittedly I am becoming more misogynistic in my old age.

<i>Religion is the one area of life in which people's prejudices and irrational beliefs are expected to be excused. </i
This was one of the many points of this movie. Bill essentially says that by doing this as atheists we are becoming enablers, enabling the starting and initiating of wars, hate, segregation, and other very "Un-God" like behavior.. When you think about it, it makes sense <br
In the latest surveys almost 20% of Americans say that are non-believers. That is larger than the gay community, the Jewish Community and NRA Members combined and yet we have absolutely no governmental representation unlike these other communities. What he is saying is its time to become more organized and get more involved, otherwise the "rapture" might be coming, but there will be no magic involved, it will be all atomic science <br
I was quite taken by this movie in how I agree with most everything that was said.

This thread is so interesting.
Have not seen the movie, but I will.
Opinions and beliefs are so important. It really shows character.
I will wait till it is out on DVD.

Disclamer: I do not believe in everything said in this movie. I only add it for the sake of stirring up the conversation, since it is related.

A friend of mine sent me this link, I found it intriguing, thought provoking FREE full length movie. I personally think there is a good amount that is malarkey, but some interesting points are mixed in. I'll leave it to you to make your own opinions.

What about tolerance?

Yo guys,
I know I should keep my mouth shut but this topic genuinely angers me. I'm Catholic, raised that way and I like it. Do I expect everyone to join my faith? Absolutely not. But whats up with tolerance when I cannot go to my church or say my prayers without a vocal number of people insunuating to me that I am less intelligent, mature, sophisticated, or human to them?

Rant over, thank you very much for listening.

Nicely said Chris...

Sotally agree...

Im Christian and although I do not believe in other religions or atheism I respect other peoples beliefs and dont mock them... We all have the right to believe in whatever religion we want...

You know, I couldn't agree more.

The problem, one we've seen relentlessly in America the past few decades, is when organized religions start pushing for civil laws and constitutional amendments that restrict the rights of everyone, believers and non-believers alike. Unless and until they stop this nonsense, I'll continue to support whatever efforts I can to put these "religions" out of business.

All religions are as valid as this----

Open Letter To Kansas School Board

I am writing you with much concern after having read of your hearing to decide whether the alternative theory of Intelligent Design should be taught along with the theory of Evolution. I think we can all agree that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints so they can choose for themselves the theory that makes the most sense to them. I am concerned, however, that students will only hear one theory of Intelligent Design.

Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.

It is for this reason that I’m writing you today, to formally request that this alternative theory be taught in your schools, along with the other two theories. In fact, I will go so far as to say, if you do not agree to do this, we will be forced to proceed with legal action. I’m sure you see where we are coming from. If the Intelligent Design theory is not based on faith, but instead another scientific theory, as is claimed, then you must also allow our theory to be taught, as it is also based on science, not on faith.

Some find that hard to believe, so it may be helpful to tell you a little more about our beliefs. We have evidence that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. None of us, of course, were around to see it, but we have written accounts of it. We have several lengthy volumes explaining all details of His power. Also, you may be surprised to hear that there are over 10 million of us, and growing. We tend to be very secretive, as many people claim our beliefs are not substantiated by observable evidence. What these people don’t understand is that He built the world to make us think the earth is older than it really is. For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage. We have numerous texts that describe in detail how this can be possible and the reasons why He does this. He is of course invisible and can pass through normal matter with ease.

I’m sure you now realize how important it is that your students are taught this alternate theory. It is absolutely imperative that they realize that observable evidence is at the discretion of a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Furthermore, it is disrespectful to teach our beliefs without wearing His chosen outfit, which of course is full pirate regalia. I cannot stress the importance of this enough, and unfortunately cannot describe in detail why this must be done as I fear this letter is already becoming too long. The concise explanation is that He becomes angry if we don’t.

You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

In conclusion, thank you for taking the time to hear our views and beliefs. I hope I was able to convey the importance of teaching this theory to your students. We will of course be able to train the teachers in this alternate theory. I am eagerly awaiting your response, and hope dearly that no legal action will need to be taken. I think we can all look forward to the time when these three theories are given equal time in our science classrooms across the country, and eventually the world; One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence.

Sincerely Yours,

Bobby Henderson, concerned citizen.
