You know, I have no problem with God....it's his fan club that really pisses me off.

Organized religion has created a bad name for itself and its members by trying to force its arrogant holier-than-thou beliefs down the throats of the public through government intervention in people's private lives. What's worse, to me anyway, is that when you actually talk to some of these people, they haven't got a freaking clue as to why they believe what they do. Perhaps because someone told you to? Do they not have minds of their own? Or have their collective consciences been absorbed by some omnipotent being that has programmed them to think a certain way?? Believe what you want, but at least understand why you believe what you do and be able to defend those beliefs with some rational thought and justification.

My thoughts on this subject...

But whats up with tolerance when I cannot go to my church or say my prayers without a vocal number of people insunuating to me that I am less intelligent, mature, sophisticated, or human to them?

Well to be honest with you Chris, I wish I could be more tolerant towards your beliefs and I would be if I could be but here is why I cannot. There are way too many believers out there that are trying to control the lives of others. I have no problem what so ever with someone believing that a cracker is something more than a cracker. Granted I might personally think that your belief is absolutely ridiculous, just as you might think its ridiculous when I wave my arms and expect the candy dish to fly over to me, wait for me to pick out a candy and return itself to the coffee table. You have every right to think my powers to be ridiculous. Your right ends at the point to "think" my levitation is ridiculous. The second you or anyone one of your fellow believers begins to outwardly judge, makes fun of or worse yet tries to pass a law or constitutional amendment against my right to levitate a candy dish that's where my tolerances of your cracker ends. Now I do realize that there are probably more believers that are tolerant of my ways than not, the problem I have with the tolerant believers is they are just tolerant and that is all. If a large majority of the believers who see these injustices going would stand up and scream back at the ignorant and intolerant believers, well then I would have a lot more respect for all believers. Until I see this clearly and LOUDLY happening I agree with Jeff 100%. I will do everything it takes to put these "religions" out of business.

Of course there are exceptions to my "everything it takes stance". There will be times that I would prefer to keep my lack of respect for religions to myself such as when I'm invited into the home of a believer or respecting the beliefs of a spouse's family. I would never silence a believer from speaking on this website, nor would I not invite a believer to my home, nor would I ever consider not being a friend to a believer. I will however not otherwise hide or make believe that I resect someone beliefs in fairy tales until I see a concerted effort from the believer community to put a stop to the harm that their religious peer's are causing to the gay and candy dish levitating communities.

And then there is WWJD?

Well with the passage of time this isn't a realistic question. Times and technology have changed. Also there are so many different interpretations of WWJD that none of them are "true" any longer.
So due to this fact I therefore view organized religion as irrelevant.

I've also recently (just this year) renounced religion even though I was raised Baptist and Pentecostal. I refuse to live my life based on a fairy tale used soley to control people.

To the numerous churches who kicked me out and to the family that I am estranged from because of my sexuality, I say, THANK YOU! I'm much better off!

All I can say about tolerance is... why don't you tell a devout Christian that you don't believe in their god... or that you are gay and see if you are "tolerated". Of course, if they don't stone you to death, they are a hypocrite to their own religion!

I'm checking movie times now... can't wait to see that movie. It doesn't appear to be playing at AMC theaters... guess I'll have to settle for Fireproof with Kirk Cameron... not!

Amen and halleluia, boys......

A great bumper sticker I saw on my way to the Sears outlet earlier today: "It takes religion for good people to do evil things"!

As Ernest Hemmingway once said...."All thinking men are atheists".

And Mohandas Gandhi so correctly said:
"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

And Ghandi's statement is exactly what's wrong with religion.

Some interesting points here . . .

I do believe in God, but I can't stomach anyone trying to force others to agree with them on exactly who and what God is. Religion is rather like clothing: One size does not fit all!

Here's a link to a site that's been around for years. It's one of the best satires on organized religion I've ever seen, and doesn't pull any punches. Don't go there if you're a thin-skinned fundamentalist!

I am a legally recognized Reverend

in my State. I am also a non-believer.

I became a Reverend to prove a point. Look around the South and you will find a church on every street corner. We even have "street preachers" waving the bible at people during rush hour traffic. And they all beg money and want to force their opinion on you.

OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? SEND YOUR DONATION NOW. YOUR SOUL WILL BE SAVED AS SOON AS YOUR CHECK CLEARS THE BANK. CASH PREFERRED.

I remember in high school the principle addressing the entire school in the gym. He started a rant against gays. He had just realized his son was gay and could not accept it. He went on for an hour with a hate filled speech meant for his son. At the close of it he said he would even disown and put to death a child of his own if he were homosexual. Because that's what "god" would want. His son left home after graduation and lost touch with his family. Thanks to a "fine christian" father. I was screwing the football coach my last year of high school and "Coach" became my partner. He was killed by a drunk driver my second year in service.

The son and I are still friends. I went in the army after school. He moved to Boston to go to college then became a drag queen. And he has done very well and has had a great relationship with a partner of 23 years. When the father died a few years ago I called the son to let him know his father had died. He said to me "I hope he likes the god he made up in his mind as a good christian man".

I have taken notice that so far the good christian members that have lately been posting a lot of racist and republican hate are silent.

Perhaps they are at prayer meetings. Or some other debauchery.

'what the fuck is out there - nobody knows'

Exactly! Whatever we imagine and claim that it is, is very probably waaaaaaay off the mark. Something so out of the realm of our understanding that most of us would either dismiss it if we became conscious of it, or it would drive most of us mad. Anyway, god exists because of religion not the other way around. If there is no religion there is no need for a god.

I guess the jebuss

crowd is shaking their head in wonder. And judgement.

I always had a good laugh from the queens that went on christian television shows in the 1980's (jim and tammy)especially the queens singing gospel. They were always so obvious. And trying to pass for straight in the public forum. Sad.

But they probably had their own behind the scene gay club away from the christian front that they supported.

It's a subject of interest in the historic community and social anthropology community. It is always a subject of wonder in the historic and anthropology community. And it gives us a good laugh at every turn.

They have had nothing but a negative impact on any community when you really study and look at their results for long term social results.

They appear to be people of high emotion and little actual knowledge.

While I would not call anyone a "god" I would submit that all church folks need to take a calm and cool position when they are calling for WAR in GODS name.

This whole thread reminds me of the last 10 minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

;-)

Wonder if this will come around here. Will probably wait for the DVD release.

i went to see the movie it was good. Did anyone else notice the "brokeback mountain music" at one point. think it was when Maher was at the " straight/rehab place.

Thanks for recommending this movie . . .

I didn't even know about this movie, but tonight went to see it in Redwood City, California because of reading about it here. There was a good crowd in the theatre, and they really responded to the movie. It was entertaining and interesting. By the way, I am what I call a lapsed Catholic. Do I believe all the stuff? No, but in times of need, I still pray, and suppose at age 61, I will not change now.
