Ever since toothpate manufacturers started putting SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) in their products I've been having a hell of a time with peeling/cracked lips, constant plaque on my gums and near constant dry mouth. Finally I asked my dentist about it. He not only said SLS is a known carcinogen, he claimed usage of it in toothpastes is a public health catastrophe waiting to happen. He recommended a brand called Biotene, which is low-sudsing and one of the few toothpastes that doesn't contain sodium sulphates.

It's not cheap, but since I stopped using Crest all of these oral problems have disappeared, my gums look much healthier and my breath stays fresh a lot longer. Just an FYI for anyone else interested.

That answers alot of questions for me, been swapping brands between myself and my partner as it dosnt matter what we use our mouths always taste vile despite high standards or oral hygiene between us.

We had it down to the local water.

Will study the toothpastes more from now on.

Cheers

Ever since I switched to using Toms from Trader Joe's, my dentist of 24 years has been consistently flabbergasted at the positive effect it has had on my teeth between 6 month cleanings. I believe it's an all natural product as well.

Dan, if TJ's is rebranded Tom's of Maine, their toothpastes used to be SLS-free. But not anymore.

If you go to Tom's website and search their corporate FAQ, guess what the very first question is (see second link). They defend use of SLS in toothpastes, while completely ignoring studies which have shown links between oral problems (e.g. halitosis and canker sores) and SLS:

UH -OH!!

I assumed their product was still SLS-free. I'll have to do some research on Biotene and where I can purchase it. Thanks for the heads up!!

Py-Co-Pay

I used to absolutely love Py-Co-Pay tooth powder. They quite making it years ago, but I kept my bottle. I fill it with plain old baking soda. I haven't had a cavity since 1983, shortly before I quite using standard tooth paste. (I can't stand the taste of tooth paste!)
