The other day i was in town and buyed a few stuff. Then i went to the "bird pond" to watch some birds. To my amazment there was a new bird there that i havent seen before.

A pure Black Swan! As i know they are living in Australia. However i know that in our neighbour town, there have beeen a black swan in a lake there. It might be this one, that has migrated these few miles.

Anyway, it is way cool to have such bird in our town. This swan doesnt hiss at people and it "sings". I have takne some photos of it.

Here is the swan in the pond. We were in a small boat at the time and i held some bread in the other hand. We got the swan REALLY close.

Later the swan came up from the pond, wanting more food. there was a pigeon that wanted to follow the swan around quite a bit.

Anyway, funny picture.

Ouch almost got bitten

Then i did a mistake on being a little too close. It went mad a little and wanted to chase me.

On the first photo the swan was just focusing on the food and didnt cared for the "closeness".

Be very glad it does not have a mate. They are extremely territorial to the point of killing other birds that don't leave. My father said that a swan can kill a person with its powerful wings if it managed to knock you down on the ground. I think it makes it impossible for a person to breathe when it stands on their chest and beats the victim with its wings. According to the tale of Leda and the swan, a swan might be able to do other things as well.

Does anyone remember the Grimm Brothers story about the 7 princes and the wicked step mother? They went swimming every day in the river and she poured a potion in the water as they swam under the bridge. When they emerged on the other side they were swans. The Shirley Temple Storybook Theater presented this story one night in the 50s. They became human for a brief time at night. They told their only sister that the only way to break the spell was for her to gather flax, beat the stalks into linen which made her hands bloody and make them each a cape. OH, she could not utter a word while doing this so everyone thought she was mad. The wicked queen had her jailed, but the brothers brought her flax at night and she continued working. Then, just before she was to be killed as a witch, she had the 7 capes ready (she could not rescue them one at a time) and the young princes were boys again. The king found out that his sons had not died and had the wicked step mother put to death. Such wonderful children's fare.

What a beautiful bird. I don't think I've ever seen a black swan in real life. We have one pair of swans in the city park but I haven't seen them yet this year but they are out for the spring/summer, get's written up in the newspaper as a big happening here LOL

Actually a lot of fairy tales we heard as a kid originated in Germany. The familiar ending "And they all lived happily ever after" was an Anglicization of the original ending. The original ending to a lot of fairy tales was "Since we have not heard of them again, then they must all be dead".
Kind of puts a new light on "Grimms Fairy Tales", doesn't it?
