Petek: Your Oster Imperial blender is very nice--Again like the preprogrammed pulse cycles. And at its high speeds sounds like an older VitaMix.Also could be another first of high powered blenders like the VitaMix.

Pete, your blender is just like mine. I got it in the early 70s and it still is the best thing for making cole slaw. Somehow the chopping in the water removes the strong cabbage stink. Cabbage did not used to smell as strong as it does now; it must be treated with some chemical to keep it looking fresher longer, but the water chopping washes it away.

While Oster said not to chop ice in the blender, the instructions said that ice cubes could be added to liquid in the jar while the motor was on. The closest we ever came to that was making what we called Billy's Bubbling Burpy Brew. We took a can of frozen orange juice concentrate and dumped it vertically onto the blades in the blender jar. Then we added water and let 'er rip. The resulting beverage was very frothy and sweet, but after you drank it, the bubbles started collapsing and that was where the burpy part started. You felt like the glass pipes in a Draino ad with all of the fizzing and bubbling. Thank Heaven it completed its action in the upper chamber and vented upwards.

Most ACE Hardware stores carry Osterizer parts such as blades, collars, gaskets and carafes, but it's worth the wait for a carafe to show up at a thrift store for a fraction of what a new one would cost.

I recently picked up a yellow 4-button model 488 Osterizer "Dual Range 8" at a thrift store.  It was a couple of aisles away from the other blenders and small appliances, perhaps because instead of a carafe it only had the food processor attachment.  I guess it was shunned by staff that figured it wasn't a full-on blender, so it was priced at $4.99.  I only wanted the attachment, but since the base unit was all metal and it was a beefy machine, I took it all home.  The base cleaned up nicely.

The processor attachment doesn't hold much, but it will be a lot easier to clean than an actual mini-chopper's components.  I'll be using it with my Lady Kenmore blender.  I'm keeping an eye out for a carafe at the thrift stores now, and once I find one I'll be re-homing the 488 to a couple I know who are living on a shoestring.  It was built to last.
