Blueberries

Kevin looks good ! Picked up some blueberries today at the Piggly Wiggly. On sale for 99 cents. They were from New Jersey not Michigan. Tasty though.

If You Want Sweet Cornbread -

Come to Iowa.

When I first moved here, I was in a nearby Hy-Vee and saw packages of cornbread, already baked and cut in squares, in the ready-meals section. Not having had any cornbread in a while, I bought some.

Brought it home, microwaved it till hot, and dove in.

Thought I was gonna die.

The stuff was sweeter than your average birthday cake.

Since that time, my aunt sends Stiver's Best self-rising cornmeal up from Georgia a couple of times a year. And Hy-Vee can kiss my - uh, grits.

Multi-climate, lots of greenhouses or what?

Michigan must be a pretty special agricultural area. You are always cooking with "seasonal" ingredients...apples, blueberries, pineapples, passion fruit & mangos..."welcome to Cavalcade of Food and it's Coconut Season here in Michigan." The only thing that's seasonal where I live are dates and you can't do a whole lot with them.

The backyard at the cottage with tropical Lake Huron in the background. Of course Kevin makes Ralph climb that tree to pick coconuts.

Joe - LOL!

Yes, if you think harvesting those Michigan coconuts is a hard task, you should try picking enough Michigan lemons to make a tall pitcher of summer lemonade! Hardly worth all the sqeezin'!

Tropical shores of Lake Huron  lol

Most summers it does feel that way but not this year. Holy smokes it's been a cool summer other than maybe 2 weeks in mid July, unlike anything I've ever experienced around here.  We're only a few blocks off the lake and this last week the daytime temps  have struggled to pass 70 degs and the nights are downright chilly. Here it is 11 pm and it's 58 degs out.. way way off. I set off on my bike this morning for a 60 mi trip up the lakeshore and turned around halfway the wind was so stiff and cold with the darkest blackest clouds... It feels like early October.

Kevin,
See you pop that delicious looking cornbread into that fine electric oven reminded me that I have heard that electric ovens bake better than gas. I wouldn't know because I've had gas (ovens) all my life. I'm wondering if the dry heat does allow for a different kind of baking.

Anyway I'm going to try that recipe. Thanks for sharing!

Paul:

A lot depends on the individual brand and model of gas oven under discussion, but gas ovens have an inherent problem with maintaining a really constant temperature.

That problem is: The gas flame must have air to support the combustion necessary, meaning that airflow through the oven is needed. This can - on some gas ranges - make for uneven baking. I'm aware that on higher-end units, measures have been taken to combat this problem.

Electric ovens have no such requirement; the heating element could work fine in a vacuum.

Again - and this is directed towards all the gas range aficionados out there - I'm well aware that there are some gas ovens that are much better than others, and that there are some considered by their owners to be stellar bakers. But every electric oven, no matter how cheap, has the potential to be an even baker, and that is not necessarily as true on lower-end gas units.

I remember with a particular lack of fondness a Brown gas range that came in an apartment I once rented in one of those '70s complexes. You were lucky if any two cookies on a baking sheet were even close to the same color.

Kevin, aren't we about due for another C of F video?

I looked up seasonal fruits and vegtables in Michigan. August starts cantaloupe and brussel sprout time which I thought were mostly California crops. I promise, no more silly comments on your next production.

Since it's still summer, brussle sprout ice cream may be nice, this one looks pretty easy...
